Co. of Chicago. page 369 Charles Ziegler, a representative of the versatile French race, and an old and honored pioneer of the coast, at present an enterprising farmer in the vicinity of Newbridge, was born at Puttalange, France, in 1831, the son of John and Nanette (Field) Ziegler, likewise natives of Europe's greatest republic. He remained with his parents until eighteen years old, then yielded to the impulses of his adventurous nature, which were urging him to seek larger opportunities, and came to America. Landing in New Orleans, he made his way thence up the Mississippi and across the plains to California, where for the nine years following 1850, he sought assiduously for hidden treasure. He then went to farming in Mendocino county, which he helped to organize, and after busying himself in agricultural pursuits for about eight years, he spent a year in the southern part of the state. Returning again to Mendocino county at the expiration of the twelve months, he farmed near his old home for a full decade, thereupon coming to Oregon. Until four years ago his home was in Harney valley, but in 1897, he removed to Eagle valley and purchased eighty acres a mile and a half north of Newbridge post-office, where he has lived and farmed ever since, making a very pleasant home for himself and family. In 1865, our subject married Miss Zarrisia Babcock, and to their union six children have been born, Pardon, Charles, Mary, Leonie, Anna, and Louis. Mrs. Ziegler's mother, Elizabeth Rieburn Babcock, who lives at the home of Joseph Beck, is eighty-four years old and has great-great-grandchildren. In 1851 Mr. Ziegler participated in battles against the Indians in California, being under Brigadier General Winn. ************************************************ Copyright.
