Oregon - Baker County - Rye Valley Cemetery Rye Valley, Oregon submitted by W. David Samuelsen ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gold was discovered in Rye Valley in 1862 and in 1863 a very rich mine was in operation there. As miners filled the area, it became necessary to establish a cemetery so a burial plot was selected on a lonely hillside by the miners. The site is on Dixie Creek about 10 miles from its mouth were it flows into Burnt River above Huntington. The cemetery is approximately 8 miles west of Hwy 30 and about 10 or 12 miles NW of Huntington, located on a county road. Ground in this vicinity was mined out and then abandoned. As a result, the cemetery has long been uncared for and neglected. It is situated on a sagebrush hill. No known burial records other than the belief that many lonely miners are buried here. Earliest known burials in the cemetery are: Plot #1 fenced by hay wire & 2 strands barb wire unmarked Not in a plot BARNES, Rebecca J. (CARTWRIGHT) 04 Jan 1846 02 Mar 1917 BARNES, S.
