Sorensen Company at Sumpter, is in the city. J. J. O'Dair, merchant at Granite, is at the Geiser Grand. T. J. Sheedy, a mining man of Granite, is in the city. Frank S. Baillie, manager of the Columbia mine, came in last evening to witness White Whittlesey's rendition of "Soldiers of Fortune" at the opera house last evening. P. J. Bannon, an attorney of Granite, is in the city. Art Harris, manager of the Geiser Grand, is back from a few days' stay at Hot Lake. John Erwin, a pioneer and respected farmer of the lower Powder river section, was in the city yesterday. Charles Duncan, postmaster of Erwin on lower Powder river, was in the city yesterday. J. J. Joseph, of Burkemont, a prominent socialist, spent yesterday in the city. W. G. Ayre, the prominent Durkee woolgrower is in the city. - Taken to Oregon City Sheriff Shaver of Clackamas county arrived yesterday and returned last night with the man William Knowlton arrested here Wednesday by Deputy Sheriff Snow and wanted in Oregon City on a charge of abducting and robbing Belle Noyer who was engaged to marry a wealthy young farmer named Cross of Molalla. - MURDERER HELD FOR TRIAL WITHOUT BAIL Huntington, Or., Jan. 12, - J. R. Brown was stabbed to death by A. D. Barnard today. Barnard got into a fight with a bartender and was bested. He left the place and outside Brown took up the fight, when Barnard stabbed him to the heart. About half past one o'clock yesterday morning at Huntington A. D. Barnard who is one of the bridge gang working on the Oregon Short Line had a row with a bartender in a saloon in Huntington. John Brown, a brakeman on the Short Line who was unacquainted with Barnard interfered and when the latter left the saloon followed him out and followed him across the street where they engaged in a quarrell, Brown taking up the bartender' case. Barnard finally drew a knife cutting Brown two or three times, one slash taking effect in the heart killing him instantly. Barnard is an Eagle Valley man and has many relatives in baker City. Brown has a father at Albuquerque, New Mexico, who is master mechanic of the Santa Fe railroad. Dr. Snow, coroner, held an inquest in Huntington yesterday at which the verdict was rendered that Brownc ame to his death from a wound caused by a knife in the hands of Barnard. A preliminary examination of Barnard was held in Huntington before Justice of the Peace John E. Paule at which Barnard was represented and defended by Hon. Sam. White of Baker City. Barnard waived examination and was held for trial by the circuit court without bail. Marshal J. P. Hannan of Huntington brought the defendant Barnard to Baker City last night and turned him to the custody of Sheriff Brown. It is probale that White & Winfree will defend Barnard at the trial. This is one of those cases where the defendant at bar had trouble with the third party in which the deceased, a stranger interfered taking up the fight that belonged to another party. - In the Justice Court. In Justice Alf. L. Currey's court yesterday D. F. Whittaker filed a new suit against the Single Standard Gold Mining Co. For $117. E. Beggs filed suit against E. P. Torrey et al. For $29. The case of Chas. Green vs. O. D. Taylor was continued until the 19th because the principal witness absented himself. Judgement was rendered in the case of Carl Rose against Stewart and Gilfus for $39.50.
