C. Belknap and wife were down from Prairie City the last of the week. The doctor, who is treasurer of the Dixie Meadows Mining company, is very much pleased with the outlook of that property. It is the intention of the company to double the force of men at work in the mine and mill, running both a day and a night shift. The experiment of running slightly under capacity has proven so successful tha tthe waste has been eleminated and free gold ore taken from the plates without ore-crushing that causes it to slime. The concentrator is working well, and the base products will be hauled to Sumpter for treatment. It will require several teams to handle the concentrates. - Grant County News. - Returned to the Territory. Deptuy United States Marshal Tom Johnson of the northwest district of Indian Territory arrived yesterday and returned last night having in charge Jonce Elms who jumped his bonds and is wanted for selling liquor to Indians. It is understood Elms has relatives near Unity but he has been in the custody of Sheriff Brown for ten days. - Visiting Valley Friends Mr. and Mrs. A. Leonig, of this city, respected pioneer residents of Powder river valley, are on a visit to their sons in the valley, prominent farmers of the Muddy creek section. Mr. Leonig first settled in the valley in 1862 and continuously lived there until a few years ago when he sold his farm possessions for a princely sum and took up his residence in this city. - Judge Eakin to be Elevated It is said that friends of Judge Robert Eakin, of the Union-Baker-Wallowa judicial district, are preparing to nominate him for supreme judge at the next state election. Judge Eakin is serving his second term and is a popular and efficent judge. - PERSONAL Miss Mena Bachman took her departure last evening for Portland, where she will visit relatives for a couple of weeks. Art Harris, manager of the Geiser Grand, Frank Geiser, secretary and treasurer of the Baker City opera house, and John Virginius Bennes, the talented architect and humorist, went to Hot Lake yesterday to remain over Sunday. Todd Rinehart, deputy assessor of Union county, is visiting the city. Judge J. B. Messick is back from a visit to Portland and Salem. Jos. Reed of the Auburn Deep Placer Mining Company, is in the city. Mrs. A. H. McEwen, of Sumpter, was a visitor in the city yesterday. Chas. Elmer, son of the late Judge Elmer, is visiting his mother in this city. Mr. Elmer is editor of the Tribune, at Lewiston, Idaho.
