Whited-Gibbs Haines 1949-2010 Phyllis Jean Whited-Gibbs, 61, of Haines, died May 26 at her home after an extended illness. A celebration of her life will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Frontier in Haines. Phyllis was born Jan. 20, 1949, to James and Mildred McGinn in Broken Bow, Neb. Phyllis graduated from Baker High School where her family moved in 1965. Phyllis spent most of her life working in the service industry. She was a tax preparer, bookkeeper and business owner. In 1989, she purchased Brew-in-Stein in Baker City. She owned and operated this business until May 2009 when it was sold. In 1993, she opened the Frontier in Haines. Here she brought in performers John Conlee, Johnny Paycheck, The Haygar Twins, The Diamonds and many local bands. Phyllis loved children, especially those with that little spark of mischievousness. Her grandchildren brought great joy to her life. She loved spending time with them and creating memorable moments with each one. She was active in her community supporting high school rodeo, 4-H, FFA, the local schools and Haines Stampede Rodeo. Phyllis received numerous community achievement awards. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Sam; three daughters, Tracy Simpson and her husband, Chuck, of Enterprise, Rhonda Page of Baker City, Lisa Whited and her husband, Travis, of LaPine; stepsons, Justin, Jason and Beau Gibbs; stepdaughter, Tia Gibbs; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Bill and Don McGinn; sister, Marie Dillman; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mildred; two brothers, Edward and Patrick McGinn; and her nephew, Jeff Dillman.
