As you approach the intersection at the bridges and before crossing over the Willamette River that leads into downtown Corvallis, turn left at the signal and follow the directions to the town of Philomath and the ocean beaches, which is at that point a combined Hwy 20 and 34. Locally it is known as Philomath Blvd. Proceed west approximately 3 1/2 miles until you see the Bi-Mart and Safeway stores on your left at the 53rd St. intersection. Turn left at the signal and travel south about one 8/10 mile. Turn right onto Plymouth Dr. (there is a church on NW corner) and proceed west a little over a mile until you reach a four way stop at the city limits of Philomath. Here Plymouth Dr. ends, straight ahead is South Woods Dr., left is Bellfountain Rd. and right is Mt. Union Ave. Turn right onto Mt. Union Ave. and proceed north to the top of the hill where the avenue ends, approximately a quarter of a mile from the intersection. Make sure to keep to the right when the main road forks to the left. The cemetery runs along the right (or eastern) side of Mt. Union Ave. Parking is available along the side of the street, or during daylight hours one can drive into the cemetery onto a circular graveled lane. The main entrance is located next to what the remains of a large ancient locust tree that has been severely pruned in an effort to keep it alive. Just inside of the entrance, on the left side of the graveled drive, there is a plaque on a boulder dedicated to the memory of the original founder of the cemetery, Reuben Shipley. HISTORY: Mount Union is a beautifully well-kept cemetery that sits on a peaceful, grassy knoll top with inspiring views of the surrounding countryside. On the north it is bordered by native firs and maples. Even though it is an historical cemetery, it is still currently in use, so one finds a mix of old, crumbling, and sometimes artfully decorated monolithic monuments scattered among modern low-lying utilitarian gravestones. There are many gravesites without stones as well as a charity section with unnamed graves. Reuben Shipley, William Wyatt, Abiathar Newton and George Bethers formally established the cemetery on May 11, 1861 on two acres of land donated by Reuben Shipley, which he divided off of the NW corner of his 80-acre farm. Early day Oregon Territory was not hospitable to Black people, so one of the conditions Reuben placed on the land donation was that Black people could be buried there, an unusual event in those years. The name given to the cemetery showed unity with the anti-slavery Northern forces during the Civil War. Abiathar and Norrie Newton had donation land claims just to the north and west of the cemetery and during the first few years there were many Newtons buried there, leading some to call it the Newton cemetery. George Bethers, an early pioneer, traded land east of Reuben Shipley's cabin as his share of the expense of the cemetery. The Shipley farm was later owned by the Wheeler family who built a large home there. Mrs. Minnie Gray (Taylor) Wheeler later sold more acreage to the Cemetery Association to meet the growing needs of the cemetery, which brought it to its present size of 6.7 acres. Prior to coming to Oregon, Reuben Shipley was a Black slave and the overseer of a large plantation in Missouri. In 1853 he agreed to drive a team of oxen to Oregon with the Robert Shipley family, from whom he took his last name, in exchange for his freedom. After arriving in Benton County, he worked on the farm of Eldrige Hartless, who was part Black, and a neighboring pioneer of the Plymouth community. Reuben saved $1,500 and bought 80 acres adjoining the Shipleys farm. Reuben married Mary Jane Holmes, a slave of Col. Nathaniel Ford, who brought his family and slaves to Oregon in 1844, and bought the Rickreall settlement. Slaves were not legal in Oregon and court cases are recorded about this family. Reuben purchased Mary Jane's freedom for $700. This is believed to be the first case of a slave being sold in Oregon as property. Together Reuben and Mary Jane built a cabin similar to those in the southern states and was a landmark for many years with its huge fireplace and quaint porch shaded by a huge locust tree, which was brought by immigrants. They raised a family of three boys and three girls. The family participated in the social life of the Plymouth community and was well liked. They were the only Black family in Benton County. Reuben died in 1873 and both he and his wife, Mary Jane, some of the their children, and Mary Jane's second husband, Alfred Drake, are buried in Mt. Union Cemetery. HOW TO FIND INDIVIDUAL GRAVSITES: Although we added grave plot and space numbers to this enumeration, in order to help visitors find individual graves without the aid of the deeded plot map of the cemetery, we associated each gravestone we found with a section and row number. The original two acres of the cemetery are laid out fairly uniform with rows running north to south. In addition the narrow gravel lane that runs through the cemetery fairly naturally divides it into sections that we called NW, NE, SW and SE. A newer section runs long the southern boundary of the older section, which we enumerated separately and called it the New South area. Hopefully having to walk only one row will narrow one's search sufficiently to find a desired gravesite. We numbered the rows for each section separately, starting over each time with 1, 2, 3, and so forth, going from the western entrance on the street side and counting row by row toward the east. The rows in the New South section are hopeful at best, as many have only one or two in them, being the newest area. This section does not have a natural breaking point in the middle dividing it west from east as the older sections do to the north of it. The row counting in this area just runs continuously from the west to east. Hopefully one will still have some success searching this area with this system and it can be modified in the future as it grows.
