This land was originally part of a donation land claim owned by Wesley Joslyn (Joslin). This donation land claim was known since fur trapping days in the Willamette Valley as Baker Prairie. In 1863, for $1.00, Joslyn deeded one square acre of ground on the eastern edge of his land claim as a burial plot. A survey of the grounds was made in December of 1862. The cemetery plat was filed February 14, 1863, Oregon State's fourth birthday. It was recorded as number 4 in the original book of Clackamas County Records. It would be another seven and a half years before the town of Canby would be mapped. Most of the burials in this cemetery took place prior to 1900, but there are a few after that time. The cemetery is now maintained by the city of Canby. The official records of who is buried where were lost in a previous fire. The condition of the cemetery is fairly poor. Many headstones and markers have been broken. Most grave sites are unmarked. Two previous lists have been prepared on this cemetery. I used a list prepared in June of 1955 by Mrs. Wayne E. Gurley with the assistance of Mr. Roscoe Mack to provide the names of those buried in unmarked graves. All unmarked graves are prefaced with an "*". The second list I referred to was prepared by the D.A.R., copied in the late 1930's. Again, names appearing on this list but not having a stone are prefaced with a "*". My goal was to remain faithful to the inscription as it appeared on the marker. This will account for several family names appearing with different spellings as they were recorded on different family markers. I made no corrections based on assumptions or according to what was recorded on each of the two previous lists. If the information was not legible, I noted this with a "?". I then provided, in parenthesis, the information as it appeared on the two previous lists. The list as it appears below was prepared in August of 1997.
