Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 19, 2010, 3:16 pm Source: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Pages 299 -300 Author: The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company G. C. FULTON, one of the oldest professional men in Astoria, Oregon, in point of years of service, has been engaged in the practice of law here for forty-five years. During this eventful period he has been an interested witness of the marvelous development of this section of the coast country and has contributed his share to the advancement of his community along material, civic and moral lines. Mr. Fulton was born in St. Johns, Iowa, on the 24th of August, 1860, and is a son of Jacob and Elizabeth Ann (McAlister) Fulton, both now deceased. His father was a farmer and carpenter, and later became interested in a mercantile business, and in 1869 he moved with his family to Nebraska. G. C. Fulton was about nine years old when his family located in Nebraska and in the public schools of that state he received his educational training. He took up the study of law in the office of George M. Humphreys, at Pawnee City, Nebraska, and in 1882 was admitted to the bar of that state. He located in Marion, Kansas, where he entered upon the practice of his profession, but in 1883 came to the coast, settling in Snohomish City, Washington, whence, a few months later, he came to Astoria. He has devoted himself closely to the law during the subsequent years and has enjoyed uniformly successful results in the practice. He is also attorney for and a director of the Astoria Savings Bank. On October 15, 1885, Mr. Fulton was united in marriage to Miss Maude E. Hobson, who was born and reared near Astoria and is a daughter of John and Diana Hobson. Her parents were pioneers of Oregon, having crossed the plains to this state in 1842. During the gold rush to California in 1849 Mr. Hobson joined in the search for the yellow metal, but subsequently returned to Astoria, where he served as collector of customs during President Cleveland's first term. Mr. and Mrs. Fulton became the parents of a son, Alan C., born July 20, 1890, who graduated from the law department of the University of Oregon in 1915 and is now associated with his father in the practice of law. He was married to Miss Alice Fox, of Astoria, whose father, A. L. Fox, was one of the pioneer settlers of this locality. They are the parents of two children, Nancy, born January 16, 1917, and George, born March 14, 1919. The son is a member of the Masons, the Elks, the Astoria Golf and Country Club and the Clatsop County Bar Association, and is a republican in his political views. G. C. Fulton has always given his political support to the republican party and has shown a deep interest in public affairs, though never a seeker after office. He is a member of Temple Lodge, No. 7, A. F. & A. M.; Portland Consistory, A. A. S. R.; Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.; Astoria Lodge, No. 180, B. P. O. E., of which he is a past exalted ruler; the Astoria Golf and Country Club, of which he is a director, and the Chamber of Commerce. He maintains professional affiliation with the Clatsop County Bar Association, the Oregon State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. A man of wide and accurate legal learning, a determined and resourceful practitioner, and true to the highest ethics of his profession, Mr. Fulton enjoys the respect of his law colleagues and the uniform confidence of the public, being regarded as one of the representative citizens of Astoria.
