CEMETERIES: CLATSOP PLAINS PIONEER CEMETERY, CLATSOP COUNTY, OREGON "Clatsop Plains Pioneer Cemetery" Clatsop County, Oregon ********************************************************************************* USGENWEB ARCHIVES(tm) NOTICE: ************************************************ Copyright. Established: 1846. Address: Immediately west of church: 33324 Patriot Way, Warrenton, Oregon. GIS Location: Feature Name County Latitude Longitude Elev. Quadrangle Name Clatsop Plains Cemetery Clatsop 46.12222 -123.92639 25 Gearhart Directions: The cemetery is 7 miles southwest of Astoria, Oregon and 9 miles north of Seaside. It is flanked on the west side by the Rilea Military compound and on the east side by the Pioneer Presbyterian Church. Driving north or south on Interstate 101 ("Pacific Coast Scenic Byway") turn west onto Patriot Way, then south on Pioneer Way. My Site Description: The general aspect of the cemetery and its surrounding countryside is that of windswept rolling hills. The ground within the cemetery's boundaries is very spongy with a considerable buildup of moss and cropped grasses. It appears to be generally kept in that the grass is well-mown. Wildlife such as deer roam through the area and probably help to keep the brush nibbled back. Four feet high brambles border the grounds along the west side. Can be very windy as it is well exposed to all weather coming in from the Pacific Ocean which is within several miles of the site. Most of the tombstones are well worn and quite hard to read, with a few actively sinking into the earth, making it difficult to glean all information. Most markers are carved out of quartz with a few of the newer ones in granite. A number of markers are several feet tall in a pillar shape and use more than one side for engraving for multiple individuals. A small sign next to gated entry to the cemetery reads "1850, Site First Church West of the Rockies, Pioneer Cemetery". ". . .near Rilea Armed Forces Training Center, this cemetery was established in 1846. This is the oldest surviving cemetery in the county. The first settlers in the lower Columbia area are buried here, many having made the trek across the plains by foot from the East in the 1840s." --excerpt from The Daily Astorian, 2002 visitor's guide at: http://www.dailyastorian.com/2002vg/index.html --click on "Cemeteries" to view the article, "Quiet retreat: Getting away from it all", by LIISA PENNER) Other cemeteries in Clatsop Co.: Astoria Pioneer Cem., Oceanview Cem., Fort Stevens aka Soldier's or Military Cem., Sunny Hill Cem.,, Greenwood Cem., Riverview Cem., Simonds Farm Cem., Wesport Cem., Elsie Cem., Svensen Cem., Seaside aka Evergreen Cem., Knappa Prarie Cem., Jewell Cem., Nehalem Cem., Fitcha Homestead Cem., Rose Casey Farm Cem., and Hamlet Cem. About the Pioneer Presbyterian Church: "Mr. W.H. Gray, of Utica, N.Y., who married Mary Augusta Dix, born at Ballston Springs, New York both assisted in founding on Clatsop Plains the first Presbyterian church in the Northwest in 1846."(a) The church was established by Rev. Lewis Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Alva Condit and Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Gray. Ten acres was donated by Robert Morrison for the church grounds, with two additional acres later donated to be used for a cemetery. The congregation met in private homes until 1850 when a church was built. Three years later a fierce wind storm destroyed the church. A new one was built that same year that lasted for over 75 years. It was replaced in 1927, on the same site; it is still used today.(b) (a)excerpt from "Souvenir of Western Women," edited by Mary Osborn Douthit, Portland, Oregon, 1905, pg. 38. "Life of Mrs. W. H. It reads as follows: "John Pollard Gaines, born September 22, 1795 in Augusta County, Virginia to Abner Legrand Gaines and Elizabeth Mathews Gaines.. . .He died December 9, 1857 of Typhoid Fever, and is interred in the Old Pioneer Cemetery at Salem, Oregon.. . .His son Archibald went to the Clatsop Plains Cemetery in late December of 1857 and brought back his mother’s remains so that she and his father would reside next to each other for eternity." ***"Coboway, called variously Comawool, Conia, Commowell, Comowool, Connyau in the Lewis and Clark Journals, was referred to as the 1st Chief of the Clatsops.. . .there is very definite record of his descendants. Three of his daughters married white men. The second, Celiast, married Soloman Smith, one of the original Wyeth party (1832) and they also settled on French Prairie. Mr. Smith was the first teacher in what is now Oregon - 1833-34. They later moved to Clatsop Plains, SW of Skipanon, and have numerous descendants living in the area today." --an excerpt from "A FEW NOTES ON CHIEF COBOWAY (COMOWOOL)" by Burnby Bell, Historian. Their address is: Clatsop County Genealogical Society, c/o Astoria Public Library, 450 10th Street, Astoria, OR 97103. Or try entering the Society's full name in a search engine to find their website. This publication has additional information from maps and other sources. Discrepancies between my new transcription and Mr. Dennon's published information has been checked against what is actually inscribed on the tombstone. (This is not to say that tombstones cannot have errors!) There also exists an epitaphs transcription made by the DAR Astoria Chapter. It is held by the Astoria Public Library on their Astoriana shelf: A393.1. Likewise, discrepancies between the DAR list and mine have been checked against the tombstones. There appears to be additional information included in this list, but the source(s) is not noted.
