ALBERT, cashier of the Columbia County Bank, at St. Helens, Oregon, has been identified with the banking business for thirty-six years and is conceded to be a financial expert. Since coming to St. Helens he has been recognized not only a capable and dependable bank official, but has also proven his worth as a citizen and commands the uniform respect of his fellowmen. The Columbia County Bank was established in June, 1908, with a capital of ten thousand dollars, and the first officers were: William M. Ross, president and cashier; Edwin Ross, vice president; A. L. Stone, assistant cashier; directors, William M. Ross, Dr. Edwin Ross, James Dart and Martin White. The present capital stock is fifty thousand dollars, with a surplus fund of ten thousand dollars, and total resources of over six hundred and eighteen thousand dollars, The officers are, H. F. McCormick, president; E. A. Ross, vice president; H. E. Albert cashier; directors, H. F. McCormick, J. W. Day, Dr. L. G. Ross, A. F. Barnett and E. A. Ross. The bank owns and occupies a fine, two-story, class A bank building, constructed of native cut stone. The first floor is occupied by the bank and the post office, while the second floor contains offices. The bank has enjoyed a steady and healthy growth and has been an influential factor in the commercial prosperity of this locality. Its cashier, H. E. Albert was born in Salem, Oregon, April 26, 1874, and is a son of John H. and Mary (Holman) Albert, the former a native of West Virginia and the latter of Salem, Oregon. He attended the public schools, completed his education in Bishop Scott Academy at Portland and in 1891, when eighteen years of age, entered the Capital National Bank, at Salem, and remained with that institution for twenty years, rising to the position of assistant cashier. In 1911 he was appointed assistant superintendent of banks of the state of Oregon, and soon afterwards was appointed a state bank examiner, in which capacity he served two years. In 1913 he became a national bank examiner and was in the east for eight years. In 1921 he was transferred back to Oregon, where he served in that position for one year longer, when he resigned and took a position with the Portland Clearing House as examiner of the Portland city banks. He filled that position in a very acceptable manner until 1925, and in the following year became cashier of the Columbia County Bank, at St. Helens. He has given his close and painstaking attention to the interests of this institution and is giving to it the benefit of his experience and knowledge. In 1905 Mr. Albert was united in marriage to Miss Estella Hurst, who was born and reared in Salem, Oregon, and is a daughter of Fred and Emma Hurst, the former now deceased. Mr. Albert is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks at Salem. A man of alert mentality, discriminating judgment and sound views, he is also cordial and friendly in manner and public-spirited in his citizenship, so that he is regarded as a distinct asset to the community and well worthy of the confidence and esteem in which he is held by all who know him.
