J. Clarke Publishing Company ANDREW M. PARKER, of Vernonia, has been a resident of Columbia county for over fifty years, during which period he has been an active participant in the development of this favored section of the state. For a number of years he has been engaged in the real estate business and has met with a very fair measure of success. Mr. Parker was born in Brown county, Kansas, July 21, 1865, and is a son of Clark L. and Melissa F. (Griffith) Parker, mentioned in the sketch of Newton J. Parker, on other pages of this work. Brought to Oregon in early childhood Andrew M. Parker pursued his education in the log schoolhouse which stood on his father's homestead near Vernonia. He gave practical assistance in clearing the land, cutting timber and burning brush and stumps, and remained at home until he had attained his majority, when he went to work in logging camps and sawmills. He logged with ox teams for many years and helped to take the timber from many acres of land in this section of the state. In 1890 he secured a claim of fir timber land, comprising one hundred and sixty acres adjoining his father's place, and proved up on it. Subsequently he traded it for fifty-seven acres of timber land, a part of the townsite of Vernonia, and in the course of time cleared a large part of it, on which he ran sheep and cattle for several years. In September, 1923, he platted nine blocks of the farm into city lots, called the Riverview addition to Vernonia, and has since sold a part of this tract, the balance of the land being in acreage. Mr. Parker owns waterworks that supplies pure spring water by a gravity system to the Riverview tract. He is now associated with his brother, Newton J., in handling city property and also deals extensively in western Oregon timber lands. Mr. Parker is a republican in his political affiliation and has been active in local affairs, having served for fourteen years as deputy sheriff of Columbia county and several years as road supervisor. He is a member of the Grange, is a man of excellent personal qualities and stands deservedly high in the esteem of all who know him.
