Finley Mast, two or three miles this side of Remote last Friday afternoon. Mr. Mast, who was 73 years of age, and his wife and all the camping equipment for the family, were in a Ford touring car running behind the Ford sedan in which were their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Davis, and their young daughter; another daughter, Miss Ethel Mast and Sorfonna Mannering. Just as the sedan rounded a point on the road it passed a team and wagon with four. It passed all right and Mr. Mast also started around. Evidently he was watching the horses, for the tracks in the loose gravel that he ran out close to the bank for a hundred feet. Then, when he realized his danger, he must have turned his steering wheel so suddenly that the rear wheel went over he grade. Mrs. Mast says there seemed to be a number of short jumps just before the car turned over. Mrs. Mast fell or jumped out at the first turn, but the victim of the accident was picked out from under the car, after it had bumped over the boulders, 75 feet to the river bed below. His neck was broken. A few feet farther back, timber stood close to the highway and the car could not have fallen far, but there was nothing to stop it where it went over. The funeral was held at the old Whittington homestead Sunday afternoon. One son, Melvin and his wife came up from Sacramento for the funeral, returning home Wednesday afternoon.
