George Russell Bauer passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 18, 2009 at the age of 71. He was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from high school in 1957, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While based in San Diego, California, he met and married Elaine Phillips. They started their family while in southern California and in 1972, they moved to the Coos Bay area, where he worked in several lumber mills until 1979 when he was employed by Coos County Solid Waste until he retired in 2001. His hobbies included collecting coins and playing with a set of Lionel trains he had received as a child. George was a WWII history buff and was especially interested in the role the navy played in winning the war. He was a staunch conservative who enjoyed discussing politics with anyone who would listen. George was diagnosed with a rare degenerative brain disease called progressive supranuclear palsy. For more than eight years he fought a courageous battle against this disease. He overcame many obstacles along the way while always retaining his dignity and sense of humor He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Rick Evans of Monmouth; daughter, Lynn Johnson, Bellevue, WA, and her companion, Galen Doud; daughter and son-in-law, Leigh and Ken Camp, Juneau, AK; daughter, Stacy Bauer, Salem; three grandchildren, Melissa Evans, Oregon City; Michael and Mitchell Evans, Monmouth; and his good buddy, companion and best friend, Ardell Carlson, Coquille. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Bauer; his parents and sister, George, Tillie and Jeanine Bauer.
