Born July 9, 1917, in Powers, Coos County, Oregon to Parker Leatherwood and Myrtle Mae Noland Leatherwood, Letha graduated from Coquille High School and is remembered for her love of literature and music. She accompanied many of Coquille’s church congregations on the piano and violin. She married Clarence Given Summers of Basco, Illinois on September 15, 1935, in Coquille. Letha and Clarence worked together as owners of the Quelle Café and the Myrtle Lane Motel in Coquille. She was a Girl Scout leader, active in Beta Sigma Phi and the new Coquille Valley Art Association. She researched several family lines and contributed to the national genealogical knowledge base. She will be remembered as “Gramma Jam” for her love of gardening, especially her success with raspberries. Letha is survived by her son, Clarence (Larry) G. Summers, Jr., Portland, Oregon and daughter, Sandra (Susie) J. Summers Schwarm, Bandon, Oregon; three grand children: Douglas R. Schwarm, Santa Cruz, California; David G. Schwarm, Irvine, California; and Kimberly Aletha Summers Everett, Portland, Oregon. She was particularly pleased to know her six great grandchildren: Oliver Clarence Schwarm, John Parker Schwarm, Kathryn Michele Schwarm, Cody Given Schwarm, Parker Clarence Williams and Bradley Clarke Everett. Letha was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Clarence G. Summers; son, Steven A. Summers, and grand daughter, Carolyn M. Summers Williams. A celebration of her life will be held at the Summers’ home in Bandon. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Coast Hospice (Coos County, Oregon) at 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay, OR 97420.
