He died October 14, 2009 at Coquille. Earl moved to San Francisco, California when he was only a year old. He dropped out of Mission High School in San Francisco to join the merchant marines and wound up fighting in World War II. He met his lifelong sweetheart, Helen Valentine, at a USO dance at the YWCA in San Francisco and the two were married on October 29, 1948. Before leaving to join the Navy and fight in the Korean Conflict, their daughter Laura joined the family. While Earl was in Korea, Rodger joined, and later on Roy and Jennifer came along. Much of the discomfort he experienced in the last few years was a result of frostbite sustained while serving with the “Chosin Frozen,” Dog Company 7 of U.S. Marines, where he was affectionately called “Taylor the Sailor,” where he earned himself a silver star and purple heart. Earl held down a number of jobs in San Francisco in construction and law enforcement before returning to the sea. He began working for Sause Brothers Towing out of Coos Bay, and the family relocated to Coquille. The two most important things in life for Earl were his family and his church. He served as an Elder and High Priest holder for over 30 years in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His family will all miss Grandpa’s hugs and songs. He is survived by his wife, Helen; children Laura Eschler, Rodger Taylor, and Roy Taylor; grandchildren Kathleen Gundersen, Rebecca Russell, Esther Wolfe, Jennifer White, Carl Eschler, Albert Eschler, Edwin Eschler, Robert Taylor, Laura Taylor, Aaron Taylor, Stephanie Taylor, April Henderson, Gabriel Taylor, Peter Taylor, Paul Taylor, Rodger Taylor, Rachael Taylor, Roy Taylor, Charles Taylor, and Michael Wellard; and 32 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Wellard, and two grandchildren, Levi Taylor and Elizabeth Eschler. Funeral Services were held on October 17th with interment at Myrtle Crest Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Myrtle Grove Funeral Service, 396-3158.
