Co. of Chicago. page 464 ALEXANDER McKENNA Practically a product of the west since when six months of age, he was brought from his native country, Ireland, by his parents, William and Sarah McKenna. September 23, 1847, was the time when he first saw the light, and California was the destination of the first trip from Ireland. In Humboldt county they finally settled and remained until 1863, at which time Mr. McKenna struck out into the activities of life for himself. he cam eto Canyon City at that time, and engaged in a hotel for a period, and then went to work in a sawmill on Pine creek, remaining in this last employement for six years. At that time he bought the mill, and for twelve years he was busies with the manufacture of lumber, achieving a very gratifying success. Selling the mill then, he turned his attention to agriculture, purchasing a farm about eight miles from Canyon City. In this occupation he was engaged continuously from that time until 1899, and then he sold his ranch and bought the livery and feed stable in Canyon City, where he is doing a good business at the present time, being one of the most progressive and leading citizens of the town. He is one of the city councilmen at the present time, and has ever demeaned himself with wisdom and a marked display of integrity. The marriage of Mr. McKenna and Miss Lucetta, daughter of J. C. and Sarah (Demick) Gillingswater, was celebrated in Grant county. Three children were the fruit of this union: William, who died in infancy; Sarah, wife of C. Darrity and Milton. Mrs. McKenna died on October 7, 1880. Mr. McKenna contracted a second marriage, the lady of his choice this time being Miss Alice Jenkins, and to them have been born eight children: Anna, the wife of C. Ingle; David; Dora; Emma; Velma; Charley; Edward; Hazel.
