He had been a guest at the Canyon Creek Guest Home, John Day, for some time following a stroke. His body was discovered Tuesday, June 20, in the John Day River three miles west of John Day behind the Homer Barry Ranch. Mr. Valade was born December 11, 1899, to the home of Carlos Anthony and Molly Belle (Glover) Valade at the family home below Dayville and lived his entire life in the Dayville area/ Mr. Valade served in the U. S. Army from August 2, 1942 to March 15, 1943, at which time he was discharged. He was married to Retha McDonald on July 26, 1942, in Stevenson, Washington, and they had since made their home at Dayville. Mr. Valade retired as an Oregon State Highway Division employee on January 1, 1966, after more than 23 years of employment. He retired in the spring of 1970 as Dayville city recorder and treasurer, after serving consecutively from 1950 to that time. When he was a young man, he herded sheep and some of his time was spent carving a cane with a 75-cent pocket knife, which took seven months to complete and was said to be one of the finest of its kind. The cane was exhibited at the Chicago Worlds Fair. Mr. Valade was an elder of the Dayville Presbyterian Church, a past commander of Alexander Harper American Legion Post at Dayville and a member of Canyon City Lodge No. 34, AF&AM, and the Rod and Gun Club. Among survivors are his widow, Retha Valade of Dayville; two sisters, May Robertson of Woodburn and Edna Blaser of Red Bluff, California; one brother, Darrell Valade of Cove; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death two brothers, Ralph and Earl Valade. Memorial services were conducted Monday, June 12, at Dayville Presbyterian Parish, and the Rev. Milo Franke, former Dayville pastor who is now of the John Day Assembly of God officiating. Mrs. Rhys Humphreys of Kimberly was pianist, and soloists were Wayne Adams and Mrs. Willard Colpitts, both of Dayville. James Allen, John Day, officiated at the services for Canyon City Lodge No. 34 AF&AM. Honorary pallbearers were James Amis, George McKay and Leslie Martin, all of Dayville, and Tom Conlee of Fossil. Private graveside services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, June 21, at the Canyon City Cemetery, with Driskill Memorial Chapel, John Day, in charge of arrangements. The Rev. Gerald Emerson officiated at the services.
