In 1844, Mount St. Helen, the next highest on the opposite side of the Columbia River, passed through a violent eruption, during which its beautiful conical summit was destroyed and its altitude reduced more than a thousand feet. The whole country for hundreds of miles in every direction, was thickly strewn with ashes.
