The terrible accident occurred at 10:30 o'clock on Tuesday March 9th. The two brothers were working together at the same machine drilling a hole in which the blast had evidently partly missed fire, when the explosion occurred. Frank was killed instantly, and Fred sustained serious injuries. He is now at the company hospital at Coram, his brother Lawrence remaining by his bedside to care for him. Frank's remains arrived here Wednesday evening, Messrs. T. B. McClellan and Jas. Smith, both employed at the mine, accompanied them. The funeral took place at 2:30 Thursday afternoon, Rev. Howard officiating. Frank and Fred Whitsett were twin brothers, sons of Mr. and Mrs. James Whitsett of Glendale and were born in Eugene April 10, 1885. Mrs. T. B. McClallen of Jacksonville and Mrs. J. Prowett of Glendale are sisters of the deceased. The news of the dreadful accident has completely prostrated the poor mother, without has been in very feeble health for a long time, and the entire community joins in deepest sympathy for her, and also for the father and brothers in the grief for the sudden and untimely death of their beloved son and brother. Frank was an industrious, manly young man, respected and loved by all who knew him, and his death has saddened, not only his relatives, but his young friends as well. Just in the morning of life, ready and eager to take up the duties and responsibilities it seems extremely sad to see this promising career snuffed out like the flame of a candle, and in our limited vision we vainly exclaim, "Why?" Why should the flower fade and the grasses wither, why is youth and strength taken away while age and weakness struggle on, why are ambition and true worth cut off when uselessness and crime are rampant in the land? We cannot know. Our only solace in such hours is a belief that the All-wise doeth all things well. We cannot see, we can only peer into infinity and our queries remain unanswered. - Glendale News.
