R. Johnson. Died, at his home in West Medford, on Nov. 16, N. R. Johnston, at the age of 67 years and 16 days. The deceased was born in Venango county, Pa., on Oct. 31, 1833. He moved, with his parents, to Iowa, in his 21st year and stopped a[t] old Ft. Atkinson. He finally settled in Chickasaw county, where he spent 31 years on his farm. Mr. Johnston was married August 21, 1860 to Martha M. Sprouls, to which union twelve children were born, ten of whom are living and were all at his bedside in his last moments. The children all live at or near Medford except two sons, one of whim lives at Oklahoma, the other in Iowa, and they arrived one week before the death of their father and helped minister to all his wants. Deceased enlisted in the army Aug. 15, 1861, in Company I, 9th Iowa, and was honorably discharged after faithfully fulfilling his duty. In 1893 he moved to Medford, Ore., to which place he was greatly attached. He was stricken with paralysis on Oct. 29, and lay sick and helpless for only eighteen short days. Everything that loving and willing hands could do was done, but his life could not be prolonged. He passed quietly away on Friday morning, Nov. 16. Deceased was for many years an honored member of Chester A. Arthur Post, G. A. R., of this city, and filled a number of prominent positions therein. His funeral was, by his wish, conducted by the Post. He was a kind and living husband and father, a good, honest and upright neighbor and citizen and a staunch Republican. Nearly his last conscious act and wish was to vote for Wm. McKinley, though he was taken to the polls in an invalid’s chair. Besides leaving a wife and ten children, four sons and six daughters, and four brothers, he leaves a host of friends to mourn his death. Medford (Oregon) Mail, Friday, 23 Nov 1900, p. 2, c. 3 Card of Thanks. We desire to thank the many friends and neighbors for their help and kindness to us during the illness and death of our dear husband and father; also for the many beautiful floral offerings. –Mrs. N. R. Johnston and Family. Medford (Oregon) Mail, Friday, 7 Dec 1900, p. 2, c. 5-6 Resolutions of Condolence. Resolutions adopted at a regular meeting of Chester A. Arthur Post, No. 47, Department of Oregon, G. A. R.: Whereas, it has pleased the Almighty and Supreme Ruler of the universe in His infinite wisdom, to remove from the bosom of his family and the comrades of this post, Noah R. Johnston; therefore, be it Resolved. That we sincerely share the sorrows of the bereaved family and extend to them our heartfelt sympathy in their misfortune, commending them in this, their greatest affliction, to the tender care of Him who suffered likewise for us and who said, “Come unto me, all ye that labor, and I will give you rest.” And be it Resolved, That we feel we have lost a faithful comrade of our order, a comrade whose memory will be held in kindly remembrance and cherished that of a true and loyal citizen, and be it further Resolved, That our charter be draped for thirty days and that a copy of these resolutions be printed in the Medford papers and sent to the family of our deceased comrade, and that a copy be placed upon the records of the post.
