He was born in Posen, Germany, and served in the German army three years, and two years in the Franco-Prussian war. He came to New York state in 1871 and there married Otinna Messol. Six months later he moved to Jackson county. He is survived by three sons--Emil, Rudolph and Henry--and three daughters--Mrs. Amelia Albers, Mrs. Matilda Schultz and Mrs. Augusta Puhl.
