Taylor, a member of Co. B, Oregon volunteers, died in Manila, on the 20 inst., of peritonitis. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Taylor and was born at Bly, Oregon, March 31, 1880. Jay joined the company which left Ashland about a year ago. While in camp at San Francisco he was taken sick and was given a furlough after which he was ordered discharged. But as he was anxious to go to the Philippines, he left here in November for San Francisco, arriving there just in time to leave on the transport with the Oregon recruits for the islands. He was sick on the voyage and an operation for appendicitis was performed on him. It was thought that he had recovered from this, having reported for duty. Letters stated that he was in the best of health. The young man was well known in Ashland, having been raised there, and the sad news of his death was a shock to not only the family but the entire community.
