Mr. Wm. Slinger, a highly respected citizen of Medford, died at his home on Sunday last, aged 67 years. Funeral services were held on Tuesday and were conducted by the Masons of this city and those of adjoining towns. The religious ceremonies were conducted by Judge W. S. Crowell. Mr. Slinger was taken ill about two months ago, he having caught a cold while in attendance at the organization of the Eastern Star lodge of this city. Pneumonia followed the cold and was the cause of his death, which is sadly deplored by all our townspeople, among whom he was always a favorite. He was born in Indiana in 1833 and crossed the plains to Nevada and California when he was but seventeen years of age, and in which two states he followed mining until he came to the Rogue river valley in 1887, where he has since resided. He was married in 1872. He was a member of the Masonic order, belonging to the Blue lodge of this city, and was one of the charter members of Malta Commandery of Ashland, and members from this last named lodge in uniform formed an escort to the funeral cortege. Mr. Slinger had been a member of this fraternal order for forty years. Deceased had always been a man of active business and had always been successful, having accumulated a fortune. At the time of his death, and for several years prior thereto, he was president of the Southern Oregon Pork Packing Company, of this city. The very large attendance at the funeral told plainly of the popularity of deceased in the community and of the high esteem in which he was held by our towns people. He leaves to mourn his demise a wife and adopted son, Joseph, and a nephew, J. W. Slinger, who lives at Lake Creek, this county.
