Medford (Oregon) Mail, Friday, 7 Dec 1900, p. 2, c. 6 
Married–-Smith-Layton. The Grants Pass Observer says: “Mr. C. E. Smith and 
Miss Ella Layton were married at the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr. and 
Mrs. T. J. Layton, on Applegate, on Tuesday, November 27th. The groom is the 
proprietor of the Layton Hotel in this city, and is one of our hustling and 
prosperous business men. Mr. and Mrs. Smith arrived here in the evening and 
will make their future home at the hotel.” The groom was formerly clerk at 
Hotel Nash in this city, and has many friends here who believe they have a 
license to bestow upon the bride a profusion of congratulations–and The Mail 
is one of those believers.
