WALKER was mistaken for a deer and killed near Eugene, Oregon. Morning Daily Herald, Albany, Oregon, Wednesday, August 13, 1890, page 1: “A TERRIBLE MISTAKE A Portland Merchant Killed by a Careless Hunter Mistaken for a Deer W. H. Walker, of the Firm of Staver & Walker, Meets a Tragic Death While Hunting up the McKenzie Portland, August 12. – A private message was received here tonight from Eugene saying that W. H. Walker, of the well known firm of Staver & Walker, was accidently shot and killed to-day near Foley Springs, Lane county, sixty miles from Eugene. Mr. Walker accompanied by his wife left this city about two weeks ago for Foley Springs, taking his buggy and team and camping out. This morning he went out deer hunting with a young man names Powers. The two became separated and after hunting through the dense forests of the Cascades for a time they finely wandered near each other, and Powers hearing the brush crack a short distance from him, fired at an object which he supposed to be a deer. Mr. Walker cried out, “I’m shot,” and fell, death resulting almost instantly. The rifle ball entered his mouth, ranged down and came out the back of his neck. The body was taken to his cabin, which was near by, and placed in a wagon, which left immediately for Eugene, where it is expected to arrive in the morning. Mrs. Walker drove ahead and arrived at Eugene at 10 o’clock to-night. The body will be brought to this city, where the deceased resided, on the morning train. Staver & Walker are probably the largest agricultural implement dealers west of the Rockies, having houses in this city, Seattle, Spokane, Walla Walla and Moscow, Idaho.” Additional Comments: Willis Henry Walker was the son of David H. Walker and Julia A (Dennis) Walker. He married Abby W. Frissell. W. H. and Abby were the parents of Maurice Lee Walker. He is buried in the River View Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.
