R. Hollingshed of Little Valley, east of Harper, shot and killed Morris McCarty from whom he leased the ranch. The shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Without waiting to see whether his victim was dead or not, Hollingshed went to the Central Oregon highway, flagged a westbound car and told his occupants he had shot a man. The autoists drove to Harper from whence they notified Sheriff C. W. Glen, who with Coroner R. O. Payne and District Attorney E. M. Blodget went immediately to the scene where he found Hollingshed and the dead man. “It is the strangest case I have had in more than twenty five years service as a coroner,” said Dr. Payne in telling of the investigation. “We found no one at the ranch save Hollingshed and the dead man whose body was laying by the hay rack in the yard. Hollingshed told his story calmly. He said the he and McCarty from whom he had a lease on the ranch for five years had quarreled, McCarty had called him vile names, and had ordered him off the ranch. McCarty also got his shotgun which had been left on the place and started away. Later when hollingshed left the ranch house he found McCarty hanging around. He told him to leave, and the quarrel was resumed. He then said McCarty reached into his overalls and he thought to draw a gun which McCarty usually carried. He then stepped back into the house, got a .22 special rifle and shot either two or three times. Two bullets hit McCarty, one on the right arm, the other on the left side. This bullet came out of the mans back. “Hollingshed asked for a preliminary hearing and appeared confident that he would be exonerated. He appears to feel that his act was justified and that he would be back irrigating his ranch in a day or two. “There was no one with the men when they quarreled. Mrs. Hollingshed and their daughter were at a neighbors. McCarty has no known relatives and was about 46 years old. Hollingshed was a mechanic at Vale before he went to the ranch last year. The men had had a quarrel and came to blows, so it is said, some three weeks ago.” Additional Comments: Hollingshed McCarty Glen File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/or/malheur/newspapers/renterki2gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/orfiles/ File size: 3.0 Kb
