Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center, Weiser. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weiser, under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home, Weiser. Della was born Sept. 13, 1912, in a log cabin, in Star Valley, Wyo., in a small town called Etna, the daughter of Robert and Alice Louise Hayes Weber. She moved with her family to Malheur County, Ore., in the spring of 1920 after her father had arrived in Weiser during the flu epidemic and he became ill and had to spend a few days here. He liked the country and found a 40 acre farm on the Oregon Side in Annex. Later he bought four small farms and increased the acreage to 112 acres. The family traveled from Etna by covered wagon to Montpelier, Idaho, where they boarded the train arriving in Weiser March 18, 1920. When they arrived the lawn at the depot was so green and beautiful, they thought they had arrived in “paradise”. She started school with her brothers and sisters at Annex, in a one-room white school house. Della received all of her elementary education at Annex. During her last year at Annex, the district built a new two-room brick school house. Della’s high school education was at Ontario High School. Her father bought the first school bus and her brother, Grant, drove the bus. Della and her family were saddened by the untimely death of her father on Oct. 17, 1928. She graduated from high school in 1932 and went to work at one of the local packing sheds sorting apples. Later she worked for various families in the area doing house work. During her youth she attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Weiser, where she met and became acquainted with Dewane W. Alder, son of Albert Hyrum and Annie Wilson Alder. They were married Jan. 1, 1934, by Bishop Scott B. Brown at his home on Pioneer Road. In April of 1934, she and her husband, along with her brother, Wilford and his wife, Tena Anderson, went to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. She and Dewane moved into a small two room house located on the South East corner of his father’s farm at Jonathan on West Weiser Flat. The house was built by Dewane and his father Albert. On Feb. 17, 1935, Allan Dewane, their first child, a boy, was born. Della’s brother Grant was called to serve a mission in Germany so she and Dewane moved to her mother’s home to help care for the farm until he returned home. While there, their first daughter, Anita Marie Alder, was born May 12, 1938. They bought a 10-acre tract on her mother’s farm and built a four room house with a bathroom and a basement under the kitchen. It was in this home another son, Darryl Paul Alder, was born July 3, 1940. When Grant returned from his mission, Della and Dewane sold their small home and bought an 80 acre farm up on the bench, in Malheur County which was under the Owyhee Project, which had just recently been completed. This is where she still lived at the time of her death. This farm was mostly in sagebrush and required a lot of work. They dug a basement for their new home to be and lived in the basement from 1941 until 1946 when the rest of the house was completed. Their daughter, Susan Janice Alder, was born April 5, 1945, at Weiser General Hospital, and this completed their family of four children. Della has been an active member of the LDS Church all of her life. She has held many positions in the ward and stake. She taught in Sunday School and Primary, served as a counselor in the Primary presidency, was secretary of the stake Relief Society and the first counselor to Namoi Chandler. On Jan. 7, 1951, she was called and sustained as President of the Weiser Stake Relief Society. She has also served as chorister and organist in several organizations. She served on the Ward Genealogical Committee for several years. She taught early morning Seminary to high school age young men and women. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thomason Funeral Chapel, Weiser. Graveside services will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Valley View Cemetery, Vale. Family and friends may call at Thomason Funeral Home, Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Fred was born March 6, 1916, the son of Archie and Margaret Hawkins in Orland, Calif. Fred was the oldest of six children. He started doing a man’s job at the age of nine working with horses and making juniper posts to fence the 640-acre homestead in Ravendale, Calif. He and his uncle made 20 trips in two Model A trucks in 1934 to bring all their possessions, horses, and mules to Ontario. They arrived two years before the Owyhee Project brought water. In fact, they brought their mules to help complete the Owyhee Project by building ditches and roads. However, since President Roosevelt wantRudy Schram ed people to stay in one place after the crash of 1929, they were initially not able to work on the project since they hadn’t been in the area for six months. They had to sell all of the mules and start breaking horses to make a living. They never complained about the situation, “That was just the way it was.” Though he quit school after the eighth grade, after seven years out of school he went back to Ontario High School and finished in three years (1939), winning the national Future Farmers of America Award. After World War II, Fred and Fern bought 10 acres just south of Malheur Butte between Ontario, and Vale and continued the family tradition of custom farming, haying, threshing and land leveling. Fred and Fern donated two acres of their property to the Lincoln Sunday School, which became the current Malheur Butte Baptist Church. In 1961, the Hawkins’ sold the farm so Fred could once again go back to school, this time to attend Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, Ore., from which he graduated in 1964. The first funeral Fred ever performed was in March 1965 for his father, Archie. Fred and Fern pastored and served in several churches: Dallas, Ore.; Prairie City, Ore.; Kent, Ore.; and Midvale, Idaho; where they pastored until Fred’s retirement in January 1991. Following his retirement he served as interim pastor for the American Baptist MAL program in Dickinson, N.D. and Adams, N.Y. In each of his churches he was especially known for his hospital and home visits, no matter how far away. From his many years in farming he also had a special ministry to many farmers and ranchers who wouldn’t have had much use for the “city” preachers. Fred performed or participated in wedding ceremonies for his four children, but son, Tom, performed the ceremony when Fred was married to Maxine Norris in 1993 in Midvale, Idaho. They enjoyed taking Buffy (the cocker spaniel) on many trips in their motor home to visit family and friends. Maxine has been Fred’s loving mate and the whole family is deeply grateful for the time they had together, her humor, loving care of Fred until his death at home, and unconditionally adopting the family overnight. He will be missed. Survivors include his wife, Maxine; son, Tom and wife, Diane, of Grottoes, Va.; daughters, Marilyn and husband, Steve Donnellan of Austin, Texas, and Nancy and husband, Ken DeLong of Kuna, Idaho; grandsons, Hadley Hawkins, David Morris, Jason Morris, Josh DeLong and Matt DeLong; granddaughters, Kimberly Hawkins, Julie Hawkins Moose and Karen Morris; and great-grandsons, Cole Hawkins, Christopher Moose, Joshua Moose and Tyler Levi Douglass Moose, born Jan. 25, 2001. He is also survived by two sisters, Dolly and husband, Gene Wolf, of Wilsonville, Ore., and Althea and husband, Jim Holbrook of Bountiful, Utah; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and many friends to whom his life had been a blessing. Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Atherton, May 19, 1992, whom he married May 10, 1940 in Emmett, Idaho; son, Bruce, who died Sept. 29, 1969; his parents; two brothers, and one sister. The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Andrew Peterson of Ontario, Dr. James Smith of Boise; and all of the staff of Pathway Hospice for their kind and gentle care. And, special thanks to all of our friends for their many acts of kindness. In tears we saw you sinking, And watched you fade away, Our hearts were almost broken, We wanted you to stay. But when we saw you sleeping, So peaceful, free from pain, How could we wish you back with us, To suffer that again. It broke our hearts to lose you. But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God took you home. ---------------------------------- Marie Constance Hinkley Dec. 28, 1906 - Jan. 27, 2001 Marie Constance Hinkley, 94, Ontario, died Jan. 27, 2001, at an Ontario care center.
