Bishop Richard Beck officiated. Interment followed in the Nyssa Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post #79, Nyssa. Arrangements are under the direction of Nyssa’s Lienkaemper Chapel. Mr. Bracken died Sept. 16, 1988, at home of natural causes. He was born Nov. 9, 1909, at Vernal, Utah, a son of Orlando J. and Mary Ann Worthen Bracken. He attended several schools in southern Utah, and with his family, at the age of 12, he moved to Salt Lake City where he completed school. Following graduation, he attended the University of Utah. In the 1930’s, he married Lois Dalrymple at Salt Lake City. They were the parents of a daughter. He worked as a salesman in Salt Lake City, and also as a traveling salesman. In early 1942, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He was stationed in San Francisco and Norfolk, Va. He then served in the South Pacific Theater during World War 11. He attained the rank of chief, and was discharged in 1945. At this time, he returned to Salt Lake City, then moved to Nyssa and bought the Atkinson department store. He married Margaret Depew on March 17, 1948, at Boise, Ida. In 1952, they bought the George Henneman hardware store in Nyssa, and operated in for three months. They then remodeled the hardware store, and moved the department store stock to that location, where he remained operating the Bracken Department Store until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Nyssa Chamber of Commerce; and served on the city council, city budget board and the Nyssa School District board. He was also very active with the Nyssa Merchant Committee, and was chairman of the drive to build Malheur Memorial Hospital. He also served as chairman and board member of the hospital. He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Lodge, Elks Lodge, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fred and Margaret took a cruise to the Panama Canal and the Carribean Islands. Fred loved to golf; they took many golfing trips with other couples. He also enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Nyssa; a daughter, Carol Bracken of Sacramento, Calif.; his father-in-law, Martin W. Depew of Nyssa; three grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Bradley and Cynthia Prestiget of Palo Alto, Calif., Blain and Cheryl Gudath of Redding, Calif., and Cristie and Dr. Michael Gade of Rocklin, Calif.; a granddaughter, Andrea Gudath of Sacramento, and six great-grandchildren.
