W. Hope Passes Away Here Saturday Prominent Pioneer Resident Of Vale Since 1879 Death claimed another Malheur county pioneer with the passing of Mrs. I. W. Hope, aged 65, at her home in Vale last Saturday. Mrs. Hope, born near Battle Mountain, Nevada, March 17, 1870, had lived in Vale since 1879, two years before the establishment of a post office and had watched the city grow from a single building to its present size. Her maiden name before her marriage to Mr. Hope in 1890, was Lillie Belle Gellerman, and she was the daughter of a well known pioneer family of Malheur county. Mrs. Hope was very active in the Vale Christian church, having been a member of that group for over 30 years. She was a charter member and past noble grand of the Golden Rule Rebekah lodge, a charter member and past Worthy Matron of Golden Chair Chapter, Order of Easter Star, and a member of the Malheur County Pioneers Association. In addition to her husband, she is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Norma Rasmussen of Portland, Mrs. Erma Lowery of Cambridge, Maryland, Mrs. Mazie Cook of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Mrs. Bernice Tate, of Seattle and Hazel Hope a teacher in the Vale schools. She is also survived by four sisters and five grandchildren. Services, held from the First Christian church of Vale Wednesday afternoon, were attended by a large crowd, and conducted by Rev. Galin Harper. Pallbearers were, A. H. Chester, Yancey Chester, George Coates, B. W. Mulkey, Leo Schmidt, and Bert High. Interment was at the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
