Mr. Hayford brought with him to California a record of successful experience in two other states, Idaho and Oregon. He was one of the leaders in politics in Idaho, where he grew up, and was a prominent business man in the City of Salem, Oregon, until coming to California. Mr. Hayford was born at Belgrade, Nance County, Nebraska, March 22, 1885. The Hayford family by successive migrations crossed the continent in less than three generations, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. The Hayford family record runs back to the year 1100 in England. One of his ancestors was William Hayford, a Colonial soldier in the Seven Years or French and Indian war. He was under General Wolfe in the capture of Quebec in 1759. Later, during the Revolution, he participated in the defense of Boston, Long Island and White Plains. Other members of the family also participated in these struggles. William Hayford married Betty Bonney. Her father, Ichabod Bonney, Jr., married Elizabeth Howland in 1706. Ichabod Bonney was a son of John Bonney and a grandson of Thomas Bonney, Jr., who married Dorcas Sampson. Dorcas Sampson was a daughter of Henry Sampson, who came to America in the Mayflower in 1620, when a youth of sixteen. He was a cousin of Edward Tilley and wife, with whom he lived. Edward Tilley and wife both died during the first winter at Plymouth. Henry Sampson was then reared in the family of Capt. Miles Standish. He married Ann Plummer in 1636. A son of William and Betty (Bonney) Hayford was Albert Hayford. Washington C. Hayford, son of Albert, was a ship owner and builder in the State of Maine. He was the grandfather of the Los Angeles attorney. The parents of LeRoy George Hayford are Lewis A. and Kate F. (Sutherland) Hayford. They were born in Wisconsin and now are retired and reside at 2203 West Twenty-fifth Street in Los Angeles. Lewis A. Hayford's early life was spent in Maine and later he was a merchant in Nebraska and in Idaho. His wife is a daughter of George W. and Frances (Florella) Sutherland, and in the maternal line is a descendant of Paul Hawley, who fought as a soldier in the War of 1812. Robert Hawley, father of Paul, served an aggregate of six years, seven months in the Colonial army in the Revolutionary war and was a sergeant in Lafayette's body guard. With this splendid American ancestral background, LeRoy George Hayford was well endowed at the very outset of his life. His first school advantages were the grade schools at Belgrade, Nebraska, his birthplace. Afterwards he attended high school in Boise, Idaho, and at Boulder, Colorado. While in the Boise High School he was captain of the Cadet Company and captain of the football team. From school he entered directly into an active business career at Buhl, Idaho, where he engaged in the lumber business. In 1907 he was made vice president of the Milner-Perine Lumber Company. While living at Twin Falls, Idaho, he became active in politics, was elected county assessor and ex- officio tax collector, holding that office from 1908 to 1913. He represented Twin Falls County in the State Legislature during the years 1913-14. He also served on the Idaho Republican Central Committee. For several years Mr. Hayford accompanied his parents on an extensive tour through the states and through South America. This period of travel gave him a first hand knowledge of conditions in the western hemisphere, a knowledge that has been of inestimable value to him in his subsequent activities. After his return he located at Salem, Oregon. There he entered the real estate business as a licensed real estate broker. He materially assisted in developing that civic pride which was later and is still characterized by the expression "The Spirit of Salem," and which has done so much to further the progressive development of that city. Mr. Hayford was president of the Marion County Realty Board during 1921-22, was one of the directors of the Kiwanis Club of Salem, vice president of the Marion County Federated Clubs, and a director in the Interstate Realty Association, which included Oregon, Washington, Idaho and parts of Montana and Wyoming. On coming to Los Angeles, in 1922, Mr. Hayford entered the law school of Southwestern University. He was graduated LL. B. with the class of 1925. He is a member of the college fraternity, Omega Sigma Sigma. Since his admission to the bar he has enjoyed a very successful general law practice. In connection with the law he looks after a number of business undertakings, and is one of the owners of a promising free gold property in Arizona, which is under development. Mr. Hayford is a member of the Masonic Lodge at Buhl, Idaho, and the B. P. O. Elks and I. O. O. F. at Salem, Oregon. He married, January 29, 1930, at Los Angeles, Miss Bertrace Timpe. She was born in Iowa. Her father, Hugh H. Timpe, is a retired resident of Los Angeles.
