HOBSON - WHITNEY CEMETERY / SUBLIMITY GRAVEYARD, Marion County, Oregon ********************************************************************************* USGENWEB ARCHIVES(tm) NOTICE: ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ********************************************************************************* This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Daraleen Phillips Wade < DWade64986@aol.com > ==================================================================== Location: T8S RlW Sec. 35, 2 acres. East of Sublimity on Boedigheimer Rd., north of Coon Hollow Rd., next to a big water tank. Established in 1853. Located on the Archibald Rader donation land claim. Set aside for a cemetery by S. A. Jones. This cemetery was badly neglected for many years and became very overgrown. In recent years work parties have cleared the brush only to find it Completely overgrown in a short time. The last few years a neighbor man has tended the cemetery as his personal project and it is in the best condition it has been in for a long time. Unfortunately many of the markers that were probably here have disappeared or become illegible. It is possible other members of any deceased's family are here too, with no evidence of that being the case. Any listing of this cemetery is probably scanty at best. For more background on this cemetery see: BEAVER BRIEFS [publication of the Willamette Valley Genealogical Society], Vol. IX #4 pg 68 and Vol. XII #1 pg 7. Daraleen Wade & Bernita Sharp read this cemetery 20 September 1987 and are incorporating the information from other lists that have come to our attention. The burials are rather scattered over the cemetery and while the burials appear to have been in rows, the only place that is evident today is in the family groupings and that is the way we read the stones - in family groups. BEEBE, Eld. A. T., born June 2, 1815 In New York - Died June 5, 1879 Archibald T. Beebe, in his probate [#7081, named among his heirs is his wife, Nancy Emeline, son Charles E. and daughter Nellie M., all of Sublimity. Alfred Turner died on the Oregon Trail and Susan subsequently married Stephen Porter as his 2nd wife. The other children of the Millers were named in Stephen Porter's probate #1233. BENSON, William, 1871 - 1890 [William Ellis Dilliam Benson, 21 March 1890] BENSON, Kate, 1863 - 1884 [Marilda C./Katie M., 03 Jan 1884] BENSON, Ferman, 1861 - 1882 [Ferman E., 21 April 1882] These are all children of Charles & Marilda (Greenstreet) Benson. This lot cemented over. DIXON, Salem, born Oct 2, 1839 in Shelby Co., Iowa - Died April 15, 1853, by accidental shooting. "Death is certain,, the hour unseen" ARTHUR [one stone] south side: Gibson Arthur, born Aug 17, 1826 [rest blank] [29 Apr 1913] west side: Lydia, Wife of Gibson Arthur, born Dec 5, 1847 - died June 17, 1900 north side: Edie, Feb 11, 1882 - Feb 20, 1883 Annie, June 22, 1880 - Feb 7, 1881 Infant Dau., died Feb 5, 1868, 3 weeks Gibson Arthur married Lydia Lakey, the daughter of Pheba Harrington, in Marion County in 1865. The others named are their children. [See his obit in the Stayton Mail 01 May 1913 and an article entitled "Aged Resident" in 02 Jan 1913 issue of the "Mail".] [HARRINGTON, Samuel K.] [HARRINGTON, Pheba] While we found no evidence of the Harringtons being buried here, it seems likely they would have been. They were living with the Gibson Arthur family [see above] in the 1870 census and Pheba was still living with them in 1880, aged 77 years. [HUTTON], Oliff A., died Nov 20, 1865, aged ly 3m 24ds, Son of B. & C. Hutton Benjamin Hutton married Catherine L. Donica in 1859, Marion County, OR. He is probably their son. [ASHBY], Catherine, died Sep 17, 1867, aged 83 ys 6 ms 13 dys, Wife of John Ashby RABEN, M. [illegible] RABEN, H., son [illegible] RABEN, H. [illegible] These 3 stones are at the edge of a thicket and there could be more markers in there. One source lists the given names as Margaret, Herman & Herman. The 1895 Marion County Census includes a Rabens family at Whiteaker with J., age 21; A., age 24; Wm., age 24; M., born Germany, age 62 and J., born Germany, age 56. The 1900 Census includes John, age 38; Albert G., age 27 and Maggie, age 75. The 1896 Tax List includes John and Maggie at Sublimity. The above "M" is likely Margaret "Maqgie" the mother, and she probably died before 1905 as she is not included in that census. H. & H., listed above, may be the J. & J. listed in the census [the stones are hard to read]. The son John was living in 1905 and he is probably the John of the 1896 Tax List. The father, J/H., must have died between 1895 & 1900 as he is not in the census that year - he probably died in 1895 or 1896. None of these were located on the death index. EDDON, John, born Mar 1806, died May 18, 1873 [also in the thicket] [BERRY, Jane, born June 26, 1849, died June 22, 1896] Jane Eddon married Montgomery P. Berry in December 1872 [Marion Co. MR #1506]. The 1870 Census finds Jane, age 17, as a housekeeper in the Montgomery P. Berry home in Salem. Possibly she was the daughter of John Eddon, listed above. [LAMBERT], Elvira C., 1849 - 1907, Wife of N. L. Lambert [12 August 1907] Elvira's first husband was Wilson D. Branch, also buried in this cemetery along with 3 of their children: Walter D., Carrie & Mintie B. One of their sons, Arthur W. Branch is buried in Union Hill Cemetery. [LAMBERT], Infant, May 7, 1894 - Sept 21, 1894, son of P. & M. Lambert This is probably the son Patrick & Mattie (Lutz) Lambert. RICE, Neal Mc., died Dec 15, 1865, aged 41 ys 11 ms 12 ds He appears to have married Mary C. McDonald in Marion Co. in February 1865. In February of 1867, Mrs. Mary A. Rice married John Hanna. - There is quite a distance to the next markers [BREWER], Merton E., born Jan 14, 1869 - died Apr 16, 1869, son of J. F. & E. C. Brewer. It would appear Elizabeth C. (Hause) Brewer died at, or shortly after the birth of Merton E. After Elizabeth's death, John F. married Adora B. Stanton. They moved to Washington where John died in 1905 at Walla Walla. KENOYER, Ferman, died Jan 13, 1865, aged 23 ys 11 ms 14 ds Ferman was the son of Jeremiah & Elizabeth/Mary (Cuppy) Kenoyer. [GREENSTREET, Sarah, born 14 Sept 1800] Sarah Sullins married Absalom Greenstreet in 1819. Family records indicate Sarah is buried here, and it would seem likely she would have been. Sarah, at age 80, was living in the Charles Benson household when the 1880 census was taken. Sarah & Absalom had a large family, at least one of whom, Marilda Benson, is buried in this cemetery. Another daughter, Sarah Ellen Downing, the wife of James B. Downing may have been buried here too, or she may have been buried at Rocky Point Cemetery where James was buried. DAUGHERTY, Rev. W. H., died Sept 25, 1864, 36 ys 5 ms 4 ds Possibly he was at Sublimity with the United Brethren Church. An Emiline P. Dougherty married John Rudolph in July 1866 at Emiline's house. BENSON, Marilda, 1829 - 1900 Mother [3 or 23 March 1900] Marilda was the daughter of Absalom & Sarah (Sullins) Greenstreet [also buried in-this cemetery].
