Watters was the last of his family, 6 brothers and 7 sisters preceded him in death. One of his brothers, John M. Watters, is here in Lone Oak, Sec. 1 Lot 192. Several of Wilson & Susannas children are also here in Lone Oak, they are: Frederick & Edgar Byron, in this lot; Albert S. in Sec. 2 Lot 125; Lelia N. Bailey in Sec. 1 Lot 142; and Florence Maud Harlan in Sec. 2 lot 83. Mr. Watters was postmaster at Stayton for 15 years. The Stayton Mail of 02 June 1905, tells of an article in the Hedrick (Iowa) Journal containing a picture and sketch of the life of Mary Hart, the mother of Susanna Watters. The mother' s maiden name was Reed and she was born in Pennsylvania 16 Oct 1810. Maude May McGregor was born 05 May 1889 at Glenn Allen, Missouri, the daughter of Henley P. & Victoria McGregor. She married Edgar B. Watters 19 Nov 1913 at Marble Hills, Missouri where they lived until coming to Staytcn in 1915. She had two children, one of whom died in infancy and is in this lot. She noved to Eugene "four years ago" where she became housemother of Hoven House at Northwest Christian College. She was survived by her husband and son, Arthur, both of Eugene. Hadley Hobson 1892 - 1957 Sept 11, 1811 Father 76 ys [04 Aug 1887] [20 Feb 1957] [Father, in space] Hadley Hobson was born in Sept 1811 in Surry Co., NC - three dates being found: 06, 11 and 17. He married Emily Amanda Speinhaur on 30 August 1842 in Johnson Co., Missouri. They came to Oregon in 1848, taking up a donation land claim [#2158] which was in the area between Stayton and Sublimity. Here he lived, raised his family and died. He was "buried near Sublimity" [obit in Patton Scrapbook], which could have been in either Grier or Hobson-Whitney Cemetery. One would tend to think it was Hobson-Whitney Cemetery because of the name, and this may very well have been, but Grier Cemetery seems to have been closer to the Hobson home. It was Hadley Hobson's son, William H. Hobson, who was in business with Uriah Whitney, and it may be from that association the "Sublimity Graveyard" became known as "Hobson-Whitney". At any rate, since this lot here in Lone Oak was purchased in 1897, it seems likely he, with his two children, Emelle & Francis M., and possibly Emily, the mother, were moved here at that time. There may, however, be an error in the purchase date of the lot, which could have been at the time of Emily's death, which may have been in 1897 (see following), with her being buried here at that time and the other three moved here then or shortly thereafter. Emily A. (Speinhaur) Hobson whose birth date is given as 01 Nov 1813 on her tombstone, reportedly died at the age of 80 yrs and 6 mos. Three death dates have been located for her: Feb 1894; 10 April 1896, and 1897 - the one thing agreed upon was the place of death, San Jose, CA. While the 1894 date compares more favorably with her birthdate and age at death, the 1896 or 1897 dates fit better with her age as given in the 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880 Census, which all indicate she was born in 1817 or 1818. The lot was purchased in 1897. --End Pg 32-- Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak/Stayton Page 33 It is interesting to note the dates on Emily's and Hadley's tombstone give their birthdates, with their age at death and one might assume that was the case with Emelle & Francis M., too. The dates given for them, however, are their deathdates and this is confirmed by their ages on the various census records. Emily and Hadley had a family of ten children, only two of whom, Emelle & Francis M., seem to be buried here at Lone Oak. Some of their grandchildren are here, they being: Carl, Clyde & Eletha Hobson in Sec. 1 Lot 177 and Henry Hadley Hobson in Sec. 2 Lot 7, all of whom were children of their son Lemuel. A granddaughter, Alta Hobson Pintler, is in Sec. 3 Lot 18. Hadley Hobson, the son of Hadley & Emily Hobson, is in Fox Valley Cemetery, near Lyons. She and Adolph Hill were the parents of eight children, five of whom are here at Lone Oak. Not only were they living nearby when the 1850 Pike County, Illinois census was taken, but they also came to Oregon in 1853 via the Elliott Cutoff. [see: Immigration Rosters of the Elliott Cut-Off: 1853 & 1854 by Leah Collins Menefee] Joseph M. Jones was born in Pendleton Dist., SC. He married Mary L. "Polly" Davis in Pike County, Illinois on 03 April 1839. They came to Oregon, via the Elliott Cutoff, in 1853, taking up a donation land claim in Lane County [DLC #1119, Roseburg]. They had moved to the Sublimity area by November 1866 [the date their daughter Elizabeth A. married 0. Baird (MR #904)]. The 1870 Census shows them living in Lincoln Pct., which was the Aumsville area and north almost to Macleay, while in 1880 they are listed as living in Stayton Village. Joseph M. Jones left a Will which was dated 19 March 1891 - 4 days before the deathdate indicated on his tombstone. His probate [#1280] lists his heirs as: James Newton Jones; Thomas L. Follansby died at his home in Palouse City, Washington on 25 Oct 1907. His obituary, in SML 01 Nov 1907, informs us a child and sister are buried in the Campbell [Grier] Cemetery. This child and sister are undoubtedly Georgie M. & Lois Follansby who are now in this lot, Georgie M. being the child and Lois his sister. James Newton Jones spent most of his (adult) life in the Stayton area, the exception being 12 years at Cottage Grove. He was married 09 Sept 1869 in Lane Co., OR to Laura Iles. He was survived by two sons, F. I. of Stayton and Fred of Scio. [Lane Co. MR; obit SML 06 May 1915] His daughter, Lillie Belle Caspell, is in Sec. 1 lot 172. Geanna D. Jones was married to William E. In January 1908, he & his son purchased the W. A. Wright grocery store in Stayton. [see SML abstracts 1896 - 1908] Roy E. Thomas, in this lot, appears to be a son of this couple. Geanna died in Salem 13 June 1928. She was survived by two sons: A. C. Thomas of Los Angeles and L. L. Thomas of Marshfield, OR; two daughters: Mrs. C. E. Melvin of Eugene and Mrs. H. A. They were both living in Stayton in 1895 according to the Marion County census of that year. "Great-grandfather Bailey" is referred to in Sept 1905 in an item referring to a new son at Adam Shepherd's, and it seems likely it was Nathaniel they meant. Bertha Shepherd, Adam's wife, was a daughter of Wm. N. Bailey. His death date, which is not on the Oregon Death Index, was located in an old listing of this cemetery. Unfortunately, there are no issues of The Stayton Mail from 29 Mar to 26 April 1907, in which an obituary would have probably been printed. William N. Bailey married Margaret Elizabeth Kearns in Marion Co., OR [MR #2041] on 15 May 1877. By 1895 they were the parents of five children, only one of whom, Bertha Shepherd, is here at Lone Oak. Margaret E. Smith is the above referred to Margaret Elizabeth Kearns. She was born at Turner, OR the daughter of John & Lucy Jane (Bryant) Kearns [see Sec. 2 Lot 13]. "Elizabeth" Kearns Smith died at Alturas, CA, where her 3 sons, John, Fred, & Lloyd Bailey lived. She was also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Shepherd of Gates and Mrs. Lola Johnston of Troy, Idaho; a sister, Susie Kearns and a brother, J. T. Kearns, both of Stayton; and brother, George Kearns of Grants Pass. [SML 25 Aug 1932] Adam A. Shepherd was the son of Ephriam & Hester A. Shepherd [see Sec. 2 Lot 14]. He married Bertha Bailey in Salem, OR on 15 April 1904 [SML 22 April 1904]. William E., in this lot, would appear to be the "new son" referred to, above, in the paragraph on Nathaniel Bailey. William Shepherd was born in Stayton and had been a resident of the area all of his life. He was survived by a son and daughter, a brother and a sister. Alfred Fox purchased this lot on 16 Dec 1909 and it seems likely one of the infants died at that time. [SML 15 Oct 1914; obituary in Lizzie Conn scrapbook] Two of the sons are here in Lone Oak: Charles Enoch in Sec. 2 Lot 57 and George L. in Sec. 2 lot 16, the lot to the east. There is some question about the location of the burials in this lot. The sexton records reconstructed in the 1950s indicate Leander Brown to be buried on the west side of the lot in the B/C spaces and his wife, Martha A. Brown in the D space just south of him. They also refer to Leander being in the "surface vault", one of which there is in this lot, but it is in the F/G spaces. If he is indeed in the vault, then Martha is in the E space to the south of him. Elsie Lowery, referred to in Martha Brown’s obituary, was not located on the ODI, nor is there any record of her in the sexton records. It seems possible she could be buried here too, but if she is, there is no indication of it. James Brown, a brother of Leander, died in Stayton on 12 Feb 1904 and his obituary indicated burial was to be here at Lone Oak, but it is unknown where.
