[SML 22 Sept 1910; also see Hist. of Gilliäm County, pg 214] In October 1901, Margaret (Smith) Riggs was married to George W. Murphy [see Sec. 2 Lot 97]. The Oregon Statesman of 17 Dec 1889, front page, tells of the mysterious death, by gunshot, of W. C. Riggs about 1 1/2 miles east of Subl irnity. Mr. Riggs was a married man, about 40 years, with a wife and 3 children. The next day’s Oregon Statesman reports the jury had ruled the shooting accidental and further reports he left a wife and 4 children. The funeral was at Sublimity with interment in the "city cemetery". It seems likely he was interred in HobsonWhitney Cemetery, also known as Sublimity Graveyard, being moved here after Margaret's death in 1910, at which time this lot was purchased. Andrew W. Cornish was the son of William D. & Nancy Ann (Stanton) Cornish [see Sec. 2 Lot 45]. He and his wife, Arley E. Census shows Kate Preston’ s birthdate as May 1845 and the Oregon Death Index gives her death date as 10 Feb 1916, both of which coincide with her age as given on her tombstone. Her obituary [SML 10 Feb 1916] says she was born in Maryland in 1845, came to Oregon many years ago. She died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Frank Foster. There is no mention of other survivors. No information has been located on W.S. Preston, although he surely must have been the husband of Kate. Possibly he died 20 April 1891,or shortly before that date, as J.H. Barnaby purchased this lot at that time. He was not living when the 1900 Census was taken as Kate was living alone at Stayton.
