Thomas [see Sec. 3 Lot 76] had a furniture factory in Stayton for a time, among other business enterprises. It seems likely the mother, Mary E., and the two sons, Archibald B. & Samuel J. were originally interred at Grier Cemetery as Archibald’s obituary indicates so. Also, this lot was not purchased until 07 April 1909, so they were probably moved after that date. Matilda Francis (Smith) Thomas was the second wife of John W. Thomas, having been first married to Angus L. Ware and second to James B. Downing. Both preceded her in death. She was the mother of Thomas J. Ware, in Sec. 2 Lot 70; Bell Zora, in this lot; Rev. Since Sarah Dickens was survived a daughter, Mrs. John Nash, it seems likely it is some of her family, possibly a child. The ODI lists a Nash death in April 1927, but follow-up on that death indicates he was buried in Portland. Few children’s deaths, in this time period, have been found on the ODI, Elsie B. Shontell was a daughter of John & Sarah Dickens. =============================================================================== Aisle RING, William Edward Aug 6, 1905 - July 18, 1987 81 years [WFHM] [new stone in place Aug 1988] =============================================================================== --End pg 89 Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 90 Section No - LOT 86 DUNAGAN [double stone] space Dovie 1857 - 1928 [Dovie Jane, 01 Feb 1928] Ezekiel space 1855 - 1929 [28 Feb 1854 - 18 Dec 1929] East end of Dunagan space: ASHLEY, Tina Mae Aug 23, 1911 space space RHOADES, George E. Olmsted and William Cooper, both of whom are in this lot. William "Henry" Cooper was born 07 June 1834 in Tennessee, moving to Missouri with his parents in 1838. On 18 April 1858 he married Mary M. Bolin "who preceded him to the grave a few years ago". The Cooper family came to Oregon in 1868, settling at Bethel, Polk County where he engaged in the harness business until 1882 when he moved his family and business to Stayton. He remained in the harness business until his death. Mr. Cooper enlisted in the army in 1861, and fought throughout the Civil War. Burial to be "at Stayton". [Obit in Patton scrapbook (SML missing); Oregon Statesman 24 Aug 1911, pg 5] The 1890 Special Census for Civil War Veterans indicates Mr. Cooper served in the 9th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry for two yeas and four months between Aug 1861 and July 1865. News aticles relating to the Cooper family appear quite often in the early issues of The Stayton Mail and include references to Mr. Cooper’ s brothers & sisters. Mr. Cooper’ s parents, Elbert Emmerson & Nancy (Wann) Cooper are in Zena Cemetery, Polk County, Oregon. Unfortunately, no death date was located for Mary M. Cooper. This lot was purchased 24 Sept 1903 and it seems likely she died at that time (see reference to her death above). Few issues of The Stayton Mail exist for 1903 and no obituary was located for Mrs. Cooper in those which are extant. A brief notice of her death (in the Lizzie Conn scrapbook) tel is of her death at her home in Stayton, aged 72. The 1900 U. S. Census indicates she was born in March 1832 (in Indiana), making her age 68 in 1900. Since she died at age 72, her death appears to have occurred in 1903 or 1904. Since nearly all of the SML are extant for 1904, the 1903 date seems most likely. =============================================================================== --End Pg 91-- Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 92 Aisle =============================================================================== Section Two - LOT 88 space space space space space space space ELDER, William Calvin 1906 - 1930 [01 March 1930] William Calvin Elder was born in Stayton 25 May 1906, the son of William Arthur & Bernice Gertrude (Neal) Elder. Since Presley was born in 1901, if there were other children, they would appear to have been born and died between that date and 1910. The family was living in the Stayton area during that time, as evidenced by occasional entries in the SML, and if they did lose some children it would seem likely they would have been interred here.
