At one time this lot was surrounded --End pg 289-- Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 290 by an iron fence. It has been indicated a veteran is interred here, so a flag is placed on the lot each Memorial Day. James M. Rickey married Josephine Wishard on 06 Oct 1874, in Marion Co., OR [MR #1704] at the James Rickey house. The 1880 U. S. Census shows the Rickeys in East Salem Pct., and they have two children: Edwin, age 4 and Ethel, age 2. The 1900 U. S. Census finds this family in West Albany, with 3 more children: Joseph, age 11; Barton, age 9 and Levona, age 7. Edwin is still living with his parents, but Ethel is not. The census indicates Josephine was the mother of six children, with five of those children living. James & Josephine, with three of their children, were still living in Albany when the 1905 Linn County Census was taken. Possibly the deceased child is the one in this lot. There is a 10 year span between Ethel and Joseph, which would certainly accommodate another child. That child "could" have been born as early as June 1st of 1880 (the 1880 census included those living in the household on 01 June) and as late as Dec 1888, being a twin of Joseph. Another possibility is that it is Ethel who is in this lot, with the other child, name unknown, probably a girl and married before the 1900 Census was taken. =============================================================================== Aisle =============================================================================== Section Three - LOT 91 [?FITTON, Mrs. Adam?] space [1895 or before] [?FITTON, Adam?] space [born circa 1827] [died 24 Dec 1901] [?FITTON, William?] space [born circa 1852 or May 1857] [March 1920] space FOX, Arlene Edith "Mother" Jan 23, 1900 - June 29, 1962 Adam Fitton purchased this lot, but, unfortunately, the date was not recorded. Adam Fitton died 24 December 1901, his death date located in his Marion County Probate Record [#2095]. His only heirs were three sons: William F., of Stayton, who was 47 years of age and two others, both of whom lived in Peoria, Illinois. An article in The Stayton Mail of 11 March 1920 tells of William Fetten (sic) being found dead. He lived alone; had no relatives in Oregon and that a brother in Illinois ordered his body to buried beside the father & mother who died about 20 years ago. The latter statement seems to confirm both of the parents are in this lot. The 1895 Census, in which he was living in Stayton, shows him being 42 years of age, born in Canada. The 1900 Soundex lists him as 43 years, born in Canada East, being born in May 1857 - he was visiting in Washington County. They came to Oregon in 1852 and had DLC #1406 which was just west of Aumsville. After his father's death, his mother married Reuben Lewis, a widower on the DLC adjoining theirs on the west. Rufus & Elizabeth Van Nuys had five children, two of whom, Archie C. & Earl R., are in this lot. Their daughter, Myrtle Ida Howard is in Sec. 3 Lot 17. Archie C. & Tressa Van Nuys operated the Stayton variety store for many years. Isabel J. Van Nuys was the wife of Earl Van Nuys. * * * * Verl A. Goode was the son of Rev. David & Mariah Goode. [see: Portrait & Biographical Record of the Willamette Valley, Oregon pg 624] --End pg 293-- Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 294 An old listing of this cemetery indicates there is an unmarked grave in this lot, and it is probably for Matilda L. Wiles, the wife of Hiram K. She was living in Stayton with Jesse A. Hendershott, as his grandmother, when the 1900 U. S. Census was taken. She is not listed on the ODI, nor has an obituary been found for her in the extant issues of the SML. She was not located in the 1905 Marion County Census, but neither was Jesse Hendershott (much of the Stayton area is missing from the 1905 census, however). Marie Anna Hendershott was born 10 Feb 1887 in the Hazel Green area, near Salem to Nelson & Anna (Johnson) Williamson. She married Jesse Hendershott in 1915 in Salem. Marie's mother, Anna (Johnson) Williamson appears to have been a sister of Bertha (Johnson) Peterson, who is in Sec. 1 Lot 154. She is referred to in Louis Peterson's obituary as his niece. She was also his step-granddaughter as Peterson's daughter, Mathilda, married Marie's father after her mother's death. [see: Marion Co. MR #3005; 1895 & 1905 Marion Co. Census; SML 02 June 1949; SML 16 Feb 1928 (Peterson obit)] Jesse A. Hendershott was the son of George W. & Della A. (Wiles) Hendershott and the grandson of Hiram K. & Matilda L. Wiles, who are in this lot. He operated one of the first confectionary stores in Stayton and continued in that business for many years. Sorensen was accidentally shot by his father while they were duck hunting. [Oregon Statesman 10 Nov 1903] The Sorensen family were enumerated in the 1900 Census while living at Stayton. The father, also Bendix P. Sorensen, was 38 years old, born in Germany in may 1862 - he was a blacksmith. His wife, Andrea C., was 38 years old, born in Feb 1866, also in Germany. There were five children in the household, including Bendix P. age 8 years, all of whom were born in Nebraska. The Stayton Mail of 14 July 1899 tells of the "deal between Ben. P. Sornsen and G. W. Caspell finally closed Monday when the blacksmithing business of the latter, together with real estate and buildings were turned over to Sornsen. The purchaser is pleased with his new property and the Randolph (Neb.) Reporter will take notice that his return to Nebraska will be VERY "gradual," if ever." On March 14th, 1905, Mrs.B. P. Sornsen advertised an auction which was to be held at her home when she was going to sell her household goods. This would seem to indicate she was leaving the area. The family is not referred to in the local paper after that date. One other reference has been located to Bendex P. Sornsen in which it is indicated he became a U. S. citizen in 1887 in the District Court at Wayne Co., Nebraska. She studied at Willamette University where she met Mr. Heltzel. They were married at the Portland home of her parents on Christmas Eve 1911. She was survived by her husband and a 2 year old boy; her parents, F. K. & Nellie M. Spalding and 2 brothers. [SML 20 Aug 1914] Frederick Henry Heltzel, late of Salem, died at the age of 30. He was survived by his father, S. H. Heltzel and his grandfather Frederick K. Spalding of Sunnyside, WA. The services were handled by W. T. Rigdon of Salem with burial in the Stayton cemetery. [Oregon Statesman 05 Jan 1943 & SML 07 Jan 1943] Fredrick Heltzel appears to be the "2 year old boy" referred to in the obituary on Lila Heltzel. S. H. Heltzel purchased the east 1/2 of this lot on 28 Feb 1914 and it seems likely the infant died at that time. =============================================================================== Aisle =============================================================================== --End pg 297-- Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 298 Section Three - LOT 99 WEDDLE - large stone, center of lot space space [WEDDLE] Sarah W. 1881 - 1973 [09 Dec 1973] WEDDLE, Mary E. 12/31/17 - 7/24/87 age 69 [WFHM] on large stone: [WEDDLE] William A.
