HALL, T. B. Co. B. 27th Iowa Inf. [?Jan 1828 - 11 Feb 1904?] This may be the Thomas B. Hall who was living in Long Creek Pct., Grant Co., OR when the 1900 U. S. Census was taken. He was 71 years of age, making his age about right for having served in the Civil War - which the inscription on his marker seems to indicate he did. Unfortunately, he was not located in the 1890 Special Census of Civil War Veterans which should have clarified whether he was the one who served in Co. B of the 27th Iowa Infantry. T. B. Hall, a resident of Long Creek, Grant Co., OR died 11 Feb 1904 leaving two heirs: Irene Estella Hall and Thomas Bertram Hall, both of Long Creek and identified as his children. The 1900 U. S. Census shows the son Thomas Bertram to be 12 years of age. He was living with his mother & stepfather in Long Creek, as was his sister Irene. [Treasurer, Inheritance Div., Film 14/121 E-2, Oregon State Archives] Possibly he died while on a trip. 23. SHADLE [double stone] Edward U. 1864 - 1935 [25 July 1935] 24. Besides the daughter, she was survived by several grandchildren. [SML 08 Feb 1940] 25. thru 46. vacant 47. He had been a resident of Oregon for 40 years, coming to Stayton in 1937. He had never married. He was survived by two sisters, Anna Harold (Mrs. Alex) and Mrs. A. C. Booker. And sorrow too that ye should sorrow so. When all is done, say not my day is o'er, And that through night I seek a dimmer shore; Say rather that my morn has just begun, I greet the dawn and not a setting sun, When all is done. PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR CROSSING THE BAR Sunset and evening star And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. Alfred Tennyson End pg 354 OTHER REPORTED BURIALS AT LONE OAK Several references to burials in this cemetery have been found of which there is no tombstone, sexton record or other indication as to location of such burial. While some of these are undoubtedly buried here, and could account for some of the unidentified burials known to be here, I have not been able to confirm them. Some of the burials have been traced to other cemeteries but are being included here, with the corrected location given, in order to clarify the burial place. This is by no means a comprehensive listing - many of the references were encountered while searching for obituaries for some of the known burials. One can only wonder how many more references there are "hidden" in the newspapers, funeral home records, etc. SEXTON RECORDS INDICATING BURIAL HERE - Exact location not recorded. Although most of the following burials refer to "infant section", that is a rather general description since there are infant burials across the north end of both Sections One and Two. There are many illegible funeral home markers in that area, and while the following account for some of those, they by no means identify very many of them. DAVIS, Tami Verena - Jan 15, 1981 - Jan 15, 1981 Infant section / father, Harold J. Davis, died 14 Aug 1982 Salem with burial at Grier Cemetery. MONYELLE/MORYELLE, Christopher M. - Aug 2, 1975 - Oct 5, 1975 - Baby section SCOTT, Baby - 18 March 1978 - north end of Sec.1 by Road, Dale Scott, father WEAVILL, Jonathon (baby) - 06 Oct 1977 WILLIAMSON, Timothy James - Nov 30, 1977 - Aug 30, 1978 Section One, baby grave - Dorothy Williamson, mother ZENOR, Tanya Louise - Oct 1971 MISCELLANEOUS NOTES INDICATING BURIAL HELPMAN The old sexton ledger indicates Ruth Helpman purchased space in "East 198" on 28 Apr 1890. Nothing has been located to confirm a burial at that time. OSBORNE, Joseph A. - 12 Feb 1898 H. E. Osburn (sic) purchased Lot 180 East (this would be in what is Section Four today) on 11 Feb 1898. The Oregon Statesman of 17 Feb 1898, in the Stayton Column, reports the death on Saturday morning of "Grandpa" Osborne, who had been seriously ill for some time. He had End pg 355 Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 356 suffered with spinal troubles for years. He was survived by a wife and son. He had resided in Stayton for several years. Rev. Hinshaw, of the Friends' Church of Marion, conducted the services with interment in Lone Oak Cemetery. The 1895 Marion County Census includes Joseph A. Osborne, age 64, born in Ohio, who has paralysis, and is living at Stayton. His wife was Lydia, age 67, born New York. Also listed there are: H. E. Osborne, age 37, born Ohio; Nellie Z. Osborne, age 37, born New York; and their five children. DAVIS, Wesley - The old sexton ledger shows Wesley Davis as the owner of the south half of lot 93 on the east side (Sec. 3 Lot 93). There is no date recorded but it is entered between an 1889 entry and an 1894 entry. A note is added, dated 25 June 1946 which indicates Arch Van Nuys is moving the body and selling the south half of the lot to Mrs. V. A. Goode. There is no indication of whose body or where it was moved. LANGDON, Commodore - 1887 - 1953 This was indicated to be between Lots 51 & 71 in Section 3, in the 1954 reconstructed records. This may have been an illegible FHM for Commodore Leslie Bass who is in Sec. 3 Lot 71. Commodore Bass died in 1953, although his birth year is given as 1913 on his marker. From old, undated, list: DENNY, James M., died July 2, 1855, age 30-6-14 Since this death occurred about 35 years before the establishment of this cemetery, it seems pretty doubtful James Denny was buried here or that there was anything left to reinter after that length of time. If a marker was in existence at the time the cemetery listing was made, there is no evidence of it today, nor is there any reference to it in the reconstructed recordings done in the 1950s. James M. Denny was a son of John & Sarah (Wilson) Denny and a brother of Allen Wiley Denny who is here in Sec. 2 Lot 77. James M. Denny had a donation land claim where Sublimity is today and reportedly named the town, ran a store there and was the first postmaster. He, or his father, are supposed to have donated the land upon which Sublimity College was built. In later years these buildings were taken over by the Catholic Church and is what we know today as St. Boniface. [See Book of Remembrance by Steeves, pgs 211 -213 and Sublimity by Schmid, pgs 20, 26 & 17.] From a letter in sexton records: RICE, Mrs. B. B. - 1913 [Florence E., 17 Oct 1913] Lulu Rice wrote to W. A. Weddle in August of 1930 asking about selling the south half of Sec. 2 Lot 74 back to the cemetery board. Her mother had been interred there following her death in 1913. B. B. End pg 356 Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 357 Rice moved to Portland to live with his daughter and died there in 1921. The daughter then had her mother's body reinterred next to him in a Portland cemetery and they no longer had a need for the spaces at Lone Oak. Apparently the request was granted as the spaces were resold. REFERENCES FOUND IN THE STAYTON MAIL: BROWN, James, 12 Feb 1904 - James Brown was born in Centre Township, Rush County, Indiana, Oct 7, 1827. On 15 March 1852 he married Zorada A. Coates and in Oct 1869 they moved to Kansas where his wife died 09 Sept 1886. Mrs. Brown was a sister of E. C. Coates, who recently died at his home near Fox Valley. In April 1889, James Brown came to Oregon. [Four children are named with their birthdates given, as is the deathdates of the two daughters] His two sons, residents of Oregon, have been with him, as has also his brother, Lee Brown, of this place. He was a veteran of the Mexican War. The funeral to be at the M. E. church, under auspices of the Masonic lodge and interment in Lone Oak Cemetery. [SML 12 Feb 1904] The only reference in the sexton records which seems to correspond with this burial, is an entry in the old ledger wherein T. M. Brown purchased Sec. 3 Lot 14 on 12 Feb 1904. James Brown had a son F. M. Brown and, it was likely that son who purchased the burial space. The problem surrounding this burial is the fact that Sec. 3 Lot 14 today holds the burials of members of the Lambert family and, although the lot is not full, the Lambert burials are on the west side of the lot, along the driveway - the location in which the earliest burials in that section tended to be. If an earlier interment was encountered at the time of the Lambert burials no record was made of it. HALL, Sylvester - 30 July 1906 Sylvester Hall, for nearly forty years a resident of the Santiam valley, died Monday. He had been in town for several weeks taking medical treatment. - - Mr. Hall was a part-blood Indian. Those who have known him for years have no knowledge of his early history before coming to Fox Valley. He was probably 60 years of age. The funeral was in Stayton cemetery. [SML 03 Aug 1906] The only other reference found regarding Sylvester Hall was the 1880 U. S. Census for Linn County in which he was living in Fox Valley Precinct with the Jos. L. Turnage (sic) family, and was a day laborer. It was noted that he was Indian, aged 28, and was born in Washington Territory, as were his parents. ANDERSON, Milton M. - 09 May 1907 Milton M. Anderson died at his home at West Stayton - - aged 55 years, 1 month and 6 days. He was survived by his wife to whom he had been married 24 years, nine children, three brothers and two sisters. End pg 357 Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 358 Funeral services were held in the Christian Church with interment in the city cemetery. [SML 17 May 1907] Mr. Anderson is not in this cemetery - he is in the cemetery at Hubbard. Possibly he was moved there at some later date. MULKEY, Ethel Pearl - 13 Apr 1911 The funeral of Mrs. C. C. Mulkey - - was held from the M. E. Church in this city. Ethel Pearl Linnville was born in Curry County 27 March 1884 and was married to C. C. Mulkey on April 4th at Salem. - - Survived by three children from a former marriage, her parents who live at Aumsville, a sister and a brother. [SML 13 Apr & 27 Apr 1911] Even though Ethel Mulkey's obituary doesn't give the burial place, it seems likely it was here at Lone Oak. The sexton records indicate Chris Mulkey purchased Sec. 2 Lot 75 on 14 March 1911 - a date exactly one month before her death and was probably an error made at the time of entry in the ledger. MULKEY, Sarah Jane - 25 Feb 1912 Mrs. Sarah Jane Mulkey died Sunday at home of son, C. C. Mulkey, age 82. One of the oldest pioneers of the Willamette Valley, coming in 1847. She was married on the plains to David Mulkey whose death occurred 22 years ago. They lived first in Yamhill County, then near Portland where Mr. Mulkey worked for the Hudson Bay Company until 1850, when they took up a donation land claim 4 miles east of Stayton. Six children survived her (including Harriet E. Baldwin who is in Sec. 1 Lot 146). Funeral held at the Christian Church with interment in the local Masonic cemetery. [SML 29 Feb 1912] The reconstructed sexton records indicate someone remembered the Mulkey burials were moved in the 1930s, but no indication was given as to where. This must have been both Ethel Pearl Mulkey and her motherin- law Sarah J. Mulkey as there is now no indication of either burial. If there were other Mulkey burials here, no indication of them has been found. TITUS, William M. - 13 April 1919 William J. (sic) Titus, was born near Monmouth, Illinois 06 Feb 1862, and died at West Stayton. He married Miss Hattie Cusic in 1882 and they had nine children, five of whom survived him (they are named). He was also survived by two sisters and three brothers (including M. S. Titus who is here in Sec. 2 Lot 93). Burial in the Masonic Cemetery at Stayton. [SML 17 Apr 1919] The old sexton ledger shows M. S. Titus purchased the south half of Sec. 2 Lot 93 on 14 April 1919 - one day after the above death. There is, however, no indication of William Titus being in that lot. There are four Titus interments there, the earliest being for Moses Titus himself (1927). End pg 358 Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 359 CLEVELAND, G. W. - 16 Feb 1920 G. W. Cleveland, aged 70 years, was a resident of Stayton for many years. [No reference to any survivors.] Interred Lone Oak Cemetery. [SML 04 Mar 1920] COLE / CALE, Frank - 01 June 1926 Frank Cale (sic) was found dead Tuesday. He was thought to be a bachelor although an acquaintence said he spoke of a daughter born in Texas. He was about 55 years of age. Lone Oak Cemetery. [SML 03 June 1926] The ODI lists the death of Frank Cole 01 June 1926. GANNON, Peter - ?? May 1908 Dr. Gannon Found - A few weeks ago the Mail mentioned the disappearance of "Dr. Dandy", as he was commonly called. Yesterday evening, E. Weddle noticed buzzards flying about back of the creamery -[and] accompanied by Henry Bruer, the body of the man was found caught on a snag in the middle of the stream. Dr. Peter Gannon was of Irish descent, coming to the U. S. before the Civil War, and to Oregon during the war. He was for a time veterinary in the U. S. Army and is said to have been with Gen. Miles when he captured Geronimo. He was married at one time, his wife dying 12 years after. For years he has doctored the horses of this section. - - He was buried in the Stayton cemetery. [SML 08 May 1908] Peter Gannon was not located in the census records for 1880, 1895, 1900 or 1905. The only other record found on him was the 1900 Electors list for Sublimity Precinct in which he is identified as a V. Surgeon, age 61, born in Ireland. He was naturalized, or declared his intention to become a citizen, in September 1869 in the Luzerne County, Pennsylvania County Court. INGRAM, Alice Marie - 13 May 1939 Alice Marie Ingram, born Saturday AM, funeral the same afternoon. Survived by parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Ingram, brother Troy and sisters Beulah, Mildred and Wanda. [SML 18 May 1939] RUEF, Donald Thomas - 10 August 1947 Donald Thomas Ruef, 5 day old son of Clarence & Frances (Bartosz) Ruef, of Shaw. Born 05 August at Salem. Burial at Lone Oak with Father Math. Jonas officiating. This may be in St. Mary's Cemetery and not here in Lone Oak. End pg 359 Marion County OR Cemeteries Lone Oak / Stayton Page 360 BURIALS from W. T. RIGDON, PIONEER MORTICIANS, Salem, Oregon 1892 - 1905 Name: Date: age: Place: Ordered service: CROTHERS, W. Sept 13, 1901 93 years Stayton Cemetery P. P. Crothers [CRABTREE, Washington] Nothing was found on a W. or P. P. Crothers in the 1900 U. S. Census or other records available for that time period. However, in searching for an obituary I encountered one for WASHINGTON CRABTREE who died the same date - 13 Sept 1901, at the age of 93 years 11 months & 11 days. He was one of the early pioneers of Oregon having settled on a ranch near Stayton in 1851. He was the father of Mrs. A. J. Richardson of that place. The funeral will be held from the church at Stayton and interment will be in the Stayton Cemetery. [Oregon Statesman 15 Sept 1901] W. Crothers, of the Rigdon list, is undoubtedly Washington Crabtree. Mr. Crabtree had a son Pliney P. Crabtree who was probably the P. P. Crothers who ordered the services. Washington Crabtree is not here at Lone Oak but is across the river in WISNER CEMETERY. This appears to have been a misinterpretation of the handwriting in the Rigdon records and I suppose Wisner Cemetery could be considered a Stayton cemetery. GREENHAGLE, Geo.
