SE, east of Victor Point Road, in T8S RlE Sec. 7, on the Samuel Kincaid donation land claim. Read 30 July 1987 by Daraleen Wade and Bernita Sharp. Several years ago, the directors of Union Hill Cemetery decided to erect a marker honoring the donor of the land. Since they could not agree upon who that was they erected the marker to the "Donor of Cemetery". This marker is in the 4th Row, just north of the entry sidewalk. Some say the donor was "Hargrove", while a deed issued by George W. & Elizabeth Hunt seems to indicate they were the donors. The widow & son of William W. Hargrove, who died in 1875, are shown on the 1878 Marion County Atlas as the owners of what was the Samuel Kincaid donation land claim. Papers in William W. Hargrove's probate file indicate a son of Hargrove was quite ill in June & July of 1875 and, although it doesn't say so, this son may have died and the father may have buried him on their own place. In December of 1875, the doctor made daily visits to Mr. Hargrove until his death on the 12th of that month. That same day there is a bill for a coffin and the next day a bill for burial clothes for W. W. Hargrove. He was probably buried beside his son, in what may have been the first 2 burials in what was to become Union Hill Cemetery. In 1876, Wm. Delaney acquired 141 acres of land from the Administrix of Hargrove's estate when she had to sell the property to pay off the Outstanding debts which included doctor bills for W. W. Hargrove and his son [unnamed]. The same day, Mr. Delaney issued a Quit Claim Deed, for this same 141 acres, to George W. Hunt. Mr. Hunt and his wife, Elizabeth, immediately deeded to The Public of Union Hill District almost an acre of land, and it is this land the original portion of the cemetery lies upon. [The new part of the cemetery is also on what was the Hargrove place.] So, in probability, the Hargroves and Hunts both were the donors - the Hargroves were likely the first burials on their own land and the Hunts officially deeded the land for public use. The George W. & Elizabeth Hunt are not buried here, but in Mt. Hope Cemetery with his father and other family members. They lived on what is now Silver Falls Road, just east of the intersection with Cascade Highway, at what was known as Whiteaker and where he was the postmaster. The old postoffice building is still standing, although in rather sad shape. There are 2 "unknown" early graves which were originally near the front of The cemetery. One of them is, supposedly, a SCHOENFIELD while the other was a "miner". He is thought to have spent the winter with a WOODINGTON family and died there. These graves were moved to the back of the cemetery when the road in front of the cemetery was widened. There are no markers or other evidence of these graves. The older lots in this cemetery are not laid out in lots of the same size. Each lot seems to depend on family size. The cemetery faces the road which is not running true north & south, and while most of the lots run straight with the compass, a few are setting perpendicular with the road - all in the same row. The newest lots, on the north side of the cemetery, have been blocked out and can be identified by block and row. There are few burials in this section to date. There are a number of homemade cement markers which appear to have been made At the same time and probably were the efforts of the cemetery board to Identify the graves so marked. The only information they give, in most cases, is a name. This compilation is being made from our recent reading of the tombstones; the cemetery sexton's notes; a reading done in 1969; an earlier one done by DAR; and personal knowledge of the compilers and relatives of those buried in the cemetery. Information not taken from the tombstones, other than the comments following the listings in each lot, will be in brackets. The bracketed material is from the sexton records while the information in the brackets is from the Oregon Death Index and other sources. We read this cemetery in a serpentine fashion - starting to the left at the little entry gate, proceeding to the north, then south on the 2nd row, etc. West Row, immediately left of small gate; in front of Martin Lorence marker LORENCE, Elmer 1893 - 1968 [Veteran World War I] LORENCE, Anna Lee 1897 - 19-- BUCK, Jessie Pearl 1902 - 1980 Elmer Lorence was the son of Martin & Mary "Etha" (Schindler) Lorence who are buried in the lot immediately east of this lot.
