All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com December 11, 2007, 6:35 am Oregonnian April 10, 1893 An Alsea Pioneer Makes A Gallant and Successful Effort For Life A terrrible experience was that of James Webber,who lives alone in Paradise,a sparsely settled region in the forks of Fall Creek,40 miles west of Corvallis,and until the creation of Lincoln County a province of the Alsea district.Whiel out in the woods on the morning of Sunday,March 19,says the Corvallis Times,Webber was suddenly crushed to the earth by the fall of a burnt tree trunk 25 feet long and five feet in diameter.His right leg was broken above the knee,and though he was in a little hollow,the huger trunk,lying squarely across his body,held him so firmly that he could move nothing but hias arms,on one of which there was no hand.It was miles ot his nearest neighbor,the chance of succor was most remote and his pain was excruciating.Most men similiarly situated would have given up the ghost and this articel woudl have been titled "Found Dead".Webberthough,was brave, and set about the task of rescuing himself.A spade chanced to lay on the ground several feet away,and with a long stick he dragged it within reach and set boldly to work with his one hand to dig himself out.It took him three hours to do it and as manymore to crawl to his cabin a hundred yards away.He couldn't get in is bed,so he pulled the mattress off and crawled in.Here eh laid with nothing to eat but raw eggs and sugar,everything else being out of reach,until Wedneday evening,when a couple neighbors happned along.A litter was speedily made and the wounded man was carried by trail to Oscar Tom's place,a distance of five miles.Ini crossing Fall Creek a tree ws cut so it fell across the stream,its upper side smoothed with an ax and the litter dragged across with a rope,while oneman followed and held it from falling.Mr.Webber's pain was distressing to himself and companions.Meanwhile,Dr.Logan,of Philoomath,had been sent for,and reached the sufferer's bedsideat 3 o'clock last Friday morning.On Saturday mornign Joseph POlly started with doctor and patient in a hack for Carvallis,31 miles distant and over one of the roughest roads in America.They arrived at 11 o'clock Saturday night,and on Sunday the limb was again set,and Mr.Webbers hardships ended.He is now comfortably situated at the residence of Mrs.G.W.Quivey,and is in a fair way for recovery.The devoion shown Mr.Webber by his neighbors and physician id worhty of highest commendation.
