The Daily Independent March 24, 1893
Sophia Deckert was brought over from the mute school by Sheriff Knight this 
afternoon for the purpose of being examined for insanity. She is the daughter 
of Gabriel Deckert, of The Dalles,and has been in the mute school about five 
months. She made no progress in the sign language and the supposition is that 
she has been insane from birth.
