The affair occurred just outside the house of A.C.Dubord, where the three men had met. Connerty was engaged in reciting the details of a row he had with a neighbor named Lamere. Smith was flourishing a pistol about when warned by Connerty to put his weapon up. Immediately following his advice, Smith pulled the trigger of his pistol and Connerty fell dead, his brain pierced by the bullet from Smith's revolver. Smith fired his weapon a second time but did not do any injury. Dubord is the only witness to the crime, and on his story rests the claim made by Smith that the shooting was accidental.The murderer came to Union this morning and gave himself up and is now in the county jail.
