Charles Werdan,of Coos County, Hangs Himself In His Room
Salem,Or.,Oct.30-(Special)- Charles Werdan,a native of Austria,committed 
suicide at the State Insane Asylum this morning by hanging himself with a 
handkerchief.Werdan was 30 years old and was brought to the asylum last March 
from Marshfield,Cooc County.He has no relatives in this country,so far as 
known,but his parents are well to do residents of Ager,Austria.
Werdan was not a violent patient,but was afflicted with melancholia, and had 
attempted suicide several months ago by making a rope out of strips of 
underclothing.He was discovered in time to prevent his completing the effort 
and as close a watch was kept on him as possible.He was not allowed to keep 
his clothing in his room at night.Just before the patients went to breakfast 
at 6 o'clock this morning, and while the attendants were busy in the dining 
room,climbed up on the window sill,tied his silk handkerchief in a loop 
through the window grating,and then put his head into the loop and dropped off 
the sill. Death came by strangulation,Werdan's body wasfound by an attendant 
who went to call him about ten minutes after he went to his room.
Coroner Clough was summoned,but after an investigation he decided that an 
inquest was unnecessary,for it appeared that the asylum authorities had 
exercies all due precautions. Friends of Wedran at Marshfield have been 
communicated with and unless other instructions are received the remains will 
begiven burial here. Werdan's parents had been corresponding with the asylum 
authorities recently with a view to taking their son back to Austria,where 
they could takes care of him.
