Canfield, a well known pioneer, died at his home in Blucher Valley Wednesday. He arrived in Oregon in 1847, and was present at the terrible massacre of Dr.Whitman. Mr. Canfield was living in the blacksmith shop at the time the massacre occurred. Joseph Stanfield had brought an ox in from the plains and it had been shot Francis Sager, and Kimball, Canfield and Hoffman were dressing it between the two houses when several Indians came into the kitchen, when Tamaskey, an Indian called "The Murderer" dealt the doctor a blow on the back of the head with a pipe tomahawk which he had concealed beneath his blanket. The first blow stunned him and a second sent Dr.Whitman unconscious to the floor. John Sager, who attempted to interfere, was shot down. His throat was cut and a wooden tippet was stuffed into it. While the slaughter was going on in and around Dr.Whitman's house the three men at the beef found themselves surrounded and in the midst of a volley of balls from pistols and guns pointed at them. All were wounded, but none fell. They fled as best they could, Mr.Canfield making his way to the blacksmith shop and thence to the mansion, where he remained until night. He then fled and reached Lapwai before Mr. Spaulding did.
