All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com January 2, 2007, 6:34 pm Oregon Statesman November 7,1930 Mystery Death In Jail Probed "Wild Party" Is recalled;Inquest Is Slated For Forenoon Today Coroners inquest to investigate the cause of death of Mrs.Bobby Cannon,35,of route ,who died in the city jail yesterday morning,will be held at the W.T.Rigdon and Son mortuary at 10 a.m. today. investigation of a "party" held during the early hours of Thursday morning,which culimnated in Mrs.Cannon's being found dead in her cell in the city jail,led to the arrest on disorderly conduct charges of W.B.Pusley,20,348 North 12th street,Dewey Short,348 North 12th street and Mrs.Zoe Jones,Salem,yesterday.Pursley and Short were released on bail of $100 each and Mrs. Zoe Jone on $25.Short is cited to appear in court at 10 o'clock this morning Stories Vary in Some Detail Stories similar in the main but varying in details were told by Mrs.Jones,Pursley and Short,when they spoke of their part in the affair to Assistant District Attorney Lyle E.Page. According to the trio,the four persons involved gathered in a room at the Riverview hotel on North Commercial street about 11:30 Wednesday night.Following taking a round or two of drinks,the quartet went to a local restuarant for a meal.Then they returned to the room and took more drinks.The party grew noisy.They were told to quiet down or leaveMrs.Cannon is said to have by this time become quite intoxicated and fallen,striking her head on the bed. Short states that he left the group 3:30 a.m.,while Pursley,whose father is the proprietor of the hotel,went to bed in another room.Mrs.Canon had left,supposedly to take a taxicab to her home.Mrs.Jones left Mrs.Cannon in the all and went to her room Claims Attack Made In Hotel Officers found Mrs.Cannon in the corrider of the second floor of a building across the street from the Belview about 4 o'clock Thursday morning.in a drunken stat she told them she had been beaten up and thrown from the hotel. She was taken to the city jail and locked up.At 7 o'clock he asked for a cigarette,At nine,when Mrs.Myra Shanks,polite matron,went to the cell to give the prisoner her breakfast,she found the woman upright in a chair with a stocking tied around her neck,dea. Both of Mrs.Cannons eyes were dicolored,according to Lloyd Rigdon,who took charge of the body.There were no other marks on her which might indicate violence,he stated Says Black Eyt Was Given By Wife Short,when called from bed at his apartment,at 10:30 o'clock,had one black eye and several scratches on his face.These injuries were caused when his wife objected to an autoobile ride taken earlier in the evening with Pursley and a girl firend of the latters,he told officers. T.B.Pusely,proprietor of the hotel,said all he knew of the affair was that he got up in the night to warn the members of the party "To cut out the noise" W.B.Pursley lives with his mother,who is proprieter of an apartment house at 348 North 12th street .Short is local manager og t5he Underwood Typewriter Company. Mrs.Cannon is the daughter of Mr.and Mrs.Adam Frohmader.She is survived by three brothers,John,Thomas and Chester,and three sisters,Mrs.Margareite Heitman,and Helen and Dolly of Salem.
