All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com January 1, 2007, 7:03 pm Oreogn Statesman November 6,1930 Funeral Set Today For Rice B.Duncan,Pioneer Rice B.Duncan,80,resident of Salem and vicinity for the past 42 years,prominent early citizen and business man,died at the family home on Garden Road,Tuesday,November 4,after a serious illness of two months standing.Mr.Duncan had been ill at intervals for the past three or four years. Born in Williamsonn County,Illinois,May 4,1850,he spent his earliest years there,where he came to own flour nills.in 1881 he married his second wife,Mary F. and came to Salem with his family in 1888. For many years Duncan was manager of the old Capiatl Lumber company,which he and his partners lately sold to the Spaulding interests,who now operate it.He was an earl member of the ciyt counci and active in municipal politics,which were often very lively,according to Mrs.Col.Carla Abrams,his daughter who lives here. The Alaska gold rush took him to Nome,where he changed his plans of prospecting and undertook carpentering,at which he was an expert.This venture proved probably much more lucrative than seeking gold in the ground.After the rush he returned to Salem. In 1917 Mr.Duncan moved to his farm in the Fruitland district which he has owned for a number of years.Here he spent the rest of his life. His wfie ,Mrs.Mary F.Duncan,survives him and will continue to live at the Garden road home,with their son,Roy,Next year the Duncans would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Besides the widow there survive two daughters,Mrs.Carla Abrams of Salem and Mrs.Earl W.Baker of Clyde,Mich;and three sons ,Ralph L.of Portland,Robert M. of Burns,and Roy B. of Salem. Rice Duncan was the last member of a family of 11 children,who with his exceptoion,had all passed beyond 30 or more years ago. Mr.Duncan was active in the Congrgatinal church and for many years a deacon.He ws a member of the Maccabees order. Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. from the chapel of W.T.Rigdon and Son,with Dr.W.C.Kantner officiating.Internment will be in City View Cemetary.
