He was born in Jefferson county,new York,January 20,1829, and April 4,1847,started across the plains,arriving at the site of Independence November 14,.In 1867 he platted the town. He was married July 14,1851,to Miss Hattie Virgin. The children living are: L.R., Homer, Verd and Garlin,all of whom reside here, with the exception of Miss Garlin, who teaches in the Pomeroy High School.Mr. Hill was one of the largest hop growers in the state,and owned 1200 acres of land in this vicinity.
