All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com September 1, 2007, 8:37 pm Oregonian February 19,1893 A Marriage At salem The Son Of The Postmaster Weds A Well Known Young Lady Salem,Feb.18- On Wednesday evening last, the marriage of Mr. Ray Gilbert,eldest son o f Salem's popular postmaster,Hon.A.N.Gilbert,and miss Gustav Steiwer,of this city, was solemnized at the residence of the bride's parent,343 Liberty Street.The house was profusely decorated with ivy and flowering plants,and presented a very handsome appearance.At 8:30 o'clock the bridal party entered the double parlors to the entrancing strains of the "Wedding march" playe dby Mrs. Jessie Looney-Jones,of Portland. First to enter were four little bridesmaids.in th elead Miss Agnes Gilbert and Miss Marie Steiwer,both dressed in creame silk mulle.They marched to the bay window,from the center of which was suspended a large and exquisite horseshoe,which was composed of 10 snowy calla lillies and real orange blossoms,whose fragrance filled the room.Here the little misses parted,one going to the right and one to the left.Immediately following came Miss Ruby Cornell,in pink silk mulle and Miss helen Steiwer,in blue silk mulle.Next in order came Mr. T.A.Gilbert,of Portland,cousin of the groom and the maid of honor,Miss harriet Gaines,of Carvallis,a grand daughter of ex governor Gaines.Miss gaines looked lovely in a white silk crepe gown. The bride was stately and beautiful iin cream landsdown silk,made en traine,with Wayyeu plait at the back.She carried a bouquet of orange blossoms and Marachel Neil roses. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Earl m.Wilbur,of Portland, according to the simple and impressive form of the Unitarian church.After the ceremony,Professor Looney,of Portland,read and original and appropriate poem. After the congratulations by relatives and friends,Mrs.Jones playe da lively march.The dining room doors were then opened and all partook of a sumptiuos repast.Sixty persons were present,mostly relatives of the wedded couple,who were very popular representatives of two of Salem's oldest and most respected families.The presents were handsome,numerous and useful. The young couple will make Salem their future home,Mr.Gilbert being engaged in business there.
