Clarke Publishing Company CHARLES A. BABCOCK, president and manager of the C. A. Babcock Company, of Portland, has long been identified with the milling and feed business and the substantial success which has come to him is the legitimate outcome of his earnest and persistent efforts along well directed lines. Mr. Babcock was born in Oregon City, Oregon, in 1880, and is a son of Charles C. and Hattie L. (McCarver) Babcock. His paternal grandfather, Christopher Columbus Babcock, was born in New York state, served in the Union army during the Civil war, and in 1872, having retired from active business, brought his family to Oregon, living in Oregon City, until his death. Charles C. Babcock is deceased, and is survived by his widow, who still lives in Oregon City. The maternal great- grandfather, Mortimer M. McCarver, was a pioneer of the Pacific northwest and was the founder of Tacoma, Washington. He was the father of Jennings McCarver, father of Mrs. Hattie Babcock, who became prominent in the affairs of Clackamas county, of which he was sheriff at one time. His daughter, Mrs. Babcock, was born in Oregon City, Oregon. Charles A. Babcock received a good public school education, which he supplemented by a course in Armstrong's Business College, in Portland. He then entered the employ of R. Palitzsch & Company, who had established a feed business here in 1900. They were first located on Front street, later moving to Albina and Railroad streets, and in 1908 they built the present feed mill at 480 Railroad street. On March 1, 1918, Mr. Babcock bought the mill and business, which he has since conducted under the name of the C. A. Babcock Company. The original mill was one hundred by one hundred feet, but has since been enlarged and is now one and three stories high and one hundred by two hundred feet in size. The company is engaged in the manufacture of poultry, dairy and stock feed and the mill has a capacity of one hundred tons of feed each day of two eight-hour shifts. From thirty to forty men are employed, and the products of the mill are sold only to dealers throughout southwestern Washington and that part of western Oregon tributary to Portland. The mill products are sold under the brands of "Daisy Dairy Feed," "Shady Brook Dairy Feed," "Tiptop Scratch Feed," "Red Wing Egg Mash" and "Babcock's Best Poultry Feeds of all kinds." The firm does a monthly business of over one hundred thousand dollars, the sales for 1927 having run over one and a quarter million dollars, so that the C. A. Babcock Company is now recognized as one of the leading concerns in its line in this section of the country. He is also one of the owners of the Sunnyside Alfalfa Milling Company. In 1904 Mr. Babcock was united in marriage to Miss Alberta Fouts, of The Dalles, Oregon, and they are the parents of two children, Harriet and Blair. In his political views Mr. Babcock is a strong republican and, though a busy man, devotes a due share of his attention to matters affecting the welfare and progress of his city and county. He is a member of Roosevelt Lodge, No. 187, A. F. & A. M.; Oregon Consistory, No. 1, A. A. S. R.; Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.; and the Chamber of Commerce. He is regarded as a good business man, of sound and duly conservative judgment, is a dependable citizen and a constant and loyal friend and neighbor, and throughout the circle of his acquaintance is held in high regard.
