Clarke Publishing Company JOHN EDWARD (JACK) BARRY, of Portland, has earned a high reputation in the insurance circles of the Columbia River valley as branch manager for the Missouri State Life Insurance Company, in which capacity he has achieved an enviable record, being regarded as one of the leaders in his line of business in this state. Mr. Barry has spent practically his entire life in Portland, where his birth occurred on the 19th of September, 1893, and is a son of John and Elizabeth (O'Neil) Barry, both of whom were natives of Ireland, but were married after locating in Chicago, Illinois. In 1882 they came to Portland, Oregon, where the father successfully engaged in general contracting and carried the business on until his accidental death, on March 25, 1900. He is survived by his widow, who still lives in this city. John E. Barry attended the public schools of Portland and the University of Oregon. He entered the employ of the Union Pacific Railroad, with which company he remained until 1919, when he engaged in the general insurance business. He has proven well adapted to this line of work and has made steady advancement to his present position as branch manager for the Missouri State Life insurance Company, having supervision over Oregon and Southern Idaho. There has been a steady increase in volume of business from year to year and he is enjoying well earned prosperity. On November 5, 1927, Mr. Barry was united in marriage to Miss Maude Waterman, of Seattle, Washington. He is a republican in his political alignment and belongs to the Portland Chamber of Commerce, in which he has served on the membership committee, the Portland Hunt Club and the University Club. He is also a director of the Life Underwriters Association. He is a man of energy and aggressive business methods, makes a favorable impression on all with whom he comes in contact, and throughout the community in which he lives has won and retains the respect and good will of all who know him.
