BATES, junior member of the well known insurance firm of Durham & Bates, is an active and aggressive business man and since coming to this city has won not only material success, but also the respect and confidence of the people of the community. Mr. Bates was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1895, and is a son of John W. and Adeline C. (Connor) Bates. His father, who was a pioneer of Colorado, where he was long connected with mining interests, is deceased, and his widow is now residing in San Francisco, California. Donald H. Bates attended the public and high schools and entered the University of California, from which he was graduated in 1918. He then enlisted in the United States naval flying corps, in which he was commissioned an ensign, and served as an instructor until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged. He entered the employ of Marsh & McLennan marine insurance agents of San Francisco, in whose office he remained until 1921, when he came to Portland with that firm. In 1922 he formed a partnership with Gilbert H. Durham, under the firm name Durham & Bates, and engaged in the marine insurance business, in which they have met with a very gratifying measure of success. In 1921 Mr. Bates was united in marriage to Miss Helen Arendt, of San Francisco, and they are the parents of twin sons, Donald, Jr., and John. Mr. Bates is a member of the Oswego Country Club and the Multnomah Athletic Club and gives his political support to the republican party. He has gained a large acquaintance in this city, being a man of cordial and friendly manner, commands the good will and esteem of all who know him.
