Wakley iwakley@msn.com July 4, 2010, 4:06 pm Source: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Pages 469 - 470 Author: The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company ARTHUR R. BOHOSKEY is one of the most prominent figures in the livestock business in the Columbia River valley. He makes a specialty of sheep and his operations have steadily increased until now he is the largest individual handler of sheep in the northwest, as well as one of the leading buyers of wool. He was born in Flint, Michigan, and is a son of Michael and Katherine (Nixon) Bohoskey. His father died in Chicago, and in 1909 his mother came to Portland, where she lived until her death. Arthur R. Bohoskey received his education in the public schools of Flint, Michigan, and Chicago, Illinois, and then entered railroad work, being employed as a telegraph operator and stenographer. In 1909 he arrived in Portland and became an assistant buyer for the Union Meat Company, working under William Shepherd when the Union Stockyards were opened in that year. In 1910 he became chief buyer of sheep and hogs for the Union Meat Company (now Swift & Company), holding that position until 1917, when he resigned and went into business for himself, dealing in sheep and wool, and also running sheep on the range. He now operates under the name of Bohoskey & Company, though he is still the sole owner of the business. He still confines his activities entirely to sheep and wool, and in 1927 bought and sold over sixty thousand head of sheep and two hundred and fifty thousand pounds of wool, which record he is exceeding in the present year. He has a large feeding plant at Lyle, Washington, where he can feed fifteen thousand sheep at one time. He makes a specialty of Mt. Adams lambs, and takes practically the entire production of that locality, which he sells in all the coast markets and sends to Chicago. The results which he has attained are remarkable when it is considered that he has done it all alone, his success being based on his persistent determination, his sound, practical judgment and square dealing. In 1913 Mr. Bohoskey was united in marriage to Miss Constance Woodward, of Portland, whose father, Samuel L. Woodward, a former member of the city council of Portland, is associated with Mr. Bohoskey. To this marriage have been born three children, Mary Elizabeth, Woodward and Constance. Mr. Bohoskey is a member of the Masonic order, in which he has attained the Knight Templar degree, is a Noble of the Mystic Shrine, and belongs to the Multnomah Athletic Club. In his political views he is a stanch republican and he is an exemplar of that kind of citizenship which stands for progress and the public welfare. He is a man of great energy and marked business capacity and his integrity and sterling worth have commended him to the good opinion of all who have come in contact with him.
